For most Imperial College London engineering courses, you need 38-40 IB points overall. Several major departments publish a 40-point minimum, but the total is only one part of the requirement. You will usually also need high grades in relevant Higher Level subjects, particularly HL Mathematics and, for many courses, HL Physics or Chemistry.

This guide summarizes Imperial's published requirements for 2027 entry, checked in September 2026. Requirements can change between admissions cycles, so confirm the official course page before submitting your UCAS application.

What IB score do you need for Imperial College Engineering?

A sensible competitive target is 40-42 points, although the official minimum depends on the department. Current published minimums range from 38 points for Materials Science and Engineering to 40 points for courses including Aeronautical, Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Electronic, and Mechanical Engineering.

Meeting the minimum makes you academically eligible for consideration. It does not guarantee an interview or offer because Imperial compares applicants with other highly qualified students and several departments use an admissions test.

Imperial's general international qualification guidance gives an IB range of 38-42, normally with 6-7 in relevant HL subjects. Individual course requirements take priority over that general range.

Imperial College IB requirements by engineering course

The following table summarizes representative requirements published for 2027 entry. Always check the exact programme because subject conditions and requirements can differ between departments and course variants.

Engineering courseMinimum IB totalImportant subject information
Aeronautical Engineering MEng40Programme documentation specifies 7 in HL Mathematics and 7 in HL Physics.
Chemical Engineering MEng40Strong Mathematics and Chemistry preparation is required; verify the current HL conditions.
Civil Engineering MEng40Strong mathematical and scientific preparation is expected, and the course uses the ESAT.
Electrical and Electronic Engineering MEng40Departmental guidance specifies 7 in HL Mathematics and 7 in HL Physics; Mathematics AA is preferred.
Mechanical Engineering MEng40Guidance lists at least 6 in HL Mathematics and 6 in HL Physics, while describing 7 and 7 as the typical offer profile.
Biomedical Engineering MEng39Relevant HL Mathematics and science conditions apply.
Design Engineering MEng39Departmental guidance gives 7 in HL Mathematics and 6 in another HL subject.
Materials Science and Engineering MEng38Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry are the key relevant subjects.

There is therefore no single universal IB score for Imperial College Engineering. A student predicted 39 may meet the published total for Design Engineering but remain below the minimum for Aeronautical Engineering. Specialist, year-abroad, management, or nuclear engineering variants should also be checked separately.

Why Higher Level grades matter

A high total cannot normally compensate for a missing required subject or an insufficient HL grade. An applicant with 41 points but a 6 in HL Physics would not satisfy an Aeronautical Engineering condition requiring a 7. A student with 40 points and the required 7s in Mathematics and Physics would meet the stated academic minimum, although admission would still not be guaranteed.

When checking a course, record these separately:

  • The overall IB total
  • Every required HL subject
  • The minimum grade in each required subject
  • Any specified third-HL profile
  • The required admissions test, if applicable

Mathematical Studies cannot replace Mathematics where Mathematics is required. Your eventual conditional offer is also the controlling document, even if its wording is more specific than the general admissions page.

Which Mathematics and science subjects should you take?

For Imperial engineering, Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL is generally the safest choice. Its emphasis on algebra and calculus closely matches engineering study, and several departments explicitly prefer it.

Some departments accept both Mathematics AA HL and Mathematics AI HL. Mechanical Engineering, for example, accepts both at Higher Level while indicating a preference for AA. A preference is not a formal exclusion, but an AI HL applicant must still demonstrate strong mathematical preparation. RevisionDojo's guide to IB subjects for engineering can help students compare Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and third-HL choices.

Physics HL is essential for several routes, particularly Aeronautical, Electrical and Electronic, and Mechanical Engineering. Chemical Engineering emphasizes Chemistry, while Materials Science may allow Physics or Chemistry within its relevant subject combination. Design Engineering uses broader second-HL wording, although Mathematics remains central.

Is 40 points enough for an offer?

Forty points meets the published minimum for many Imperial engineering courses, but it does not secure admission. Depending on the department, selection may consider:

  • Predicted or achieved IB grades
  • Results in required HL subjects
  • An admissions-test result
  • The UCAS application and reference
  • Evidence of informed academic interest
  • An interview, where used

There is no official rule that every successful applicant needs 42 or more. A higher prediction can strengthen the academic profile, but it cannot repair an unsuitable subject combination, missed test, or weak performance elsewhere. The best target is the required total plus secure subject-level grades, rather than an arbitrary headline score.

For context, compare RevisionDojo's explanations of Imperial's typical IB score range and how university IB minimums should be interpreted.

Which courses require the ESAT?

For 2027 entry, Imperial requires the Engineering and Science Admissions Test, or ESAT, for:

  • Aeronautics
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering
  • Design Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

Bioengineering and Materials do not currently use an admissions test. Applicants should not assume every programme containing the word engineering has the same testing policy.

Each computer-based ESAT module lasts 40 minutes and contains 27 multiple-choice questions. Calculators and dictionaries are not permitted. Required modules depend on the department: Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering use Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, and Physics, while Chemical Engineering uses Mathematics 1, Mathematics 2, and Chemistry.

Imperial states that an application cannot be considered if a compulsory test is not completed. Registration and booking are separate from UCAS, so monitor the official deadlines yourself.

How to set and reach a realistic target

Begin with the official minimum, then build a small margin without neglecting compulsory HL grades. For a 40-point course requiring 7s in Mathematics and Physics, a prediction of 41 with 7,7,6 at HL is strategically stronger than 42 with a 6 in one required subject.

Use this sequence:

  1. Open the official page for your programme and entry year.
  2. Record the total and each required HL grade.
  3. Confirm whether AA HL is required, preferred, or treated equally with AI HL.
  4. Check whether the ESAT applies.
  5. Compare the conditions with recent timed results.
  6. Build reach, realistic, and safer UCAS choices.

Predicted grades matter because applications are usually assessed before final Diploma results, but every condition must still be achieved. RevisionDojo's predicted grades guide explains why consistent timed performance is more useful than isolated homework marks.

To improve, identify whether marks are being lost through content gaps, incomplete methods, interpretation errors, or time pressure. Review one weak topic, complete targeted exam-style questions, mark them strictly, classify each error, and retest the topic several days later. Jojo AI can clarify specific misconceptions, while the IB Grade Calculator and IB Questionbank support progress tracking and focused practice. These are planning tools, not official grade predictions.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most serious mistake is reading “40 points” while ignoring the subject conditions. Other common errors include taking required Mathematics or Physics at SL, assuming AA HL and AI HL are treated identically, missing separate ESAT deadlines, consulting an old course page, and applying only to highly selective programmes with similar requirements.

Save the requirements you used and check them again before applying. If Imperial makes an offer, follow the precise conditions stated in that offer.

Conclusion

The required IB score for Imperial College Engineering is generally 38-40 points, with 40 being the most common minimum among major departments. Relevant HL grades are equally important, and some courses require 7 in HL Mathematics and 7 in HL Physics.

Meeting these conditions establishes eligibility, not certainty of admission. Check the correct course year, prepare separately for the ESAT, and use timed practice to measure progress. RevisionDojo's Questionbank, Grade Calculator, Mock Exams, and Jojo AI can support a focused preparation plan.
