For M28 students, who started DP1 in 2026 and take final examinations in May 2028, dropping IB Design Technology HL to SL reduces syllabus content, recommended teaching time and external-assessment demand. However, the design project remains unchanged, and your school must approve the move.

M28 students follow the revised Design Technology course first assessed in 2027. Before changing level, check what disappears, what remains and whether DT must be replaced as one of your three HL subjects.

What changes when you move from HL to SL?

The main difference is depth. Design Technology SL retains design thinking, product analysis, modelling, testing and evaluation, while HL includes additional content and wider applications.

AreaDesign Technology HLDesign Technology SL
Recommended teaching time240 hours150 hours
SyllabusSL content plus HL extensionCommon SL content only
External assessmentPaper 1 and Paper 2 at HLPaper 1 and Paper 2 at SL
Design project50 hours, worth 30%50 hours, worth 40%
IA marks33 marks33 marks
Diploma statusCounts as an HLCounts as an SL

These are IB-recommended teaching hours, not guaranteed timetable hours. Your school decides how lessons are distributed and what happens to periods released by the change.

Content and examinations at SL

The revised course is structured around design theory, design in practice and design in context. Both levels study shared concepts and methods used to analyse products, respond to user needs, model ideas, test designs and justify decisions.

HL adds an extension concerning innovation and markets. Moving to SL removes this HL-only extension from your assessed syllabus, although ideas you have already learned may remain useful. SL is not purely practical; you must still interpret unfamiliar information and apply design knowledge in written examinations.

Both levels sit Paper 1 and Paper 2. Dropping to SL does not remove an entire paper, but the papers assess the smaller SL syllabus at an appropriate level. Together, external assessments contribute 60% of the SL result, compared with 70% at HL.

Ask how completed HL tests will affect reports and predicted grades. An assessment dominated by HL-only content may not accurately represent your likely SL performance, so your teacher may need more suitable SL evidence.

The Design Technology IA does not become easier

The internal assessment is an individual design project. Students analyse and redesign an existing product for an intended user or users, develop a physical fidelity model, and use testing to evaluate the proposed solution.

Under the course first assessed in 2027, SL and HL use the same criteria, duration and total marks. The project is allocated 50 hours and assessed out of 33 marks at both levels. Its weighting rises from 30% at HL to 40% at SL.

Dropping therefore does not shorten the project or remove any assessed stages. If project planning, modelling or documentation is your main difficulty, changing level may not solve the underlying problem. The RevisionDojo guide to the Design Technology IA criteria can help you review the required evidence.

Workload, timetable and Diploma rules

The reduction from 240 to 150 recommended hours is significant, but it does not create 90 immediate hours of free study. Your school might move you into an SL class, keep both levels together for shared content, or change only the lessons covering the HL extension.

Ask whether released periods become supervised study, free periods or lessons for a replacement HL. Also confirm whether the change affects workshop access, software, equipment or scheduled IA supervision. The move is most valuable when you deliberately use the available time for remaining HLs, the extended essay or regular IA work.

Your school and DP coordinator control approval, deadlines and timetable arrangements. The IB does not set one universal student deadline for level changes, so schools establish local procedures based on registration, staffing and course progress.

A full Diploma normally includes six subjects and requires at least three HL subjects. The usual arrangement is three HL and three SL, although four HL subjects may be permitted. Environmental systems and societies can satisfy the subject requirement for both Groups 3 and 4, but this does not remove the three-HL minimum.

Before requesting the change, confirm:

  • you will retain at least three HL subjects;
  • your six subjects form an approved Diploma combination;
  • the SL class fits your timetable;
  • completed assessments and predicted grades will be treated fairly;
  • another subject must be moved to HL;
  • registration, materials or examination fees apply.

Continue attending HL lessons until the school confirms the change formally. An informal conversation with a teacher does not alter your registered programme.

University implications

Universities set their own entry requirements, independently of IB Diploma regulations. Requirements differ by country, institution and degree, so check official course pages for your expected application year.

For engineering, investigate required HL Mathematics, Physics grades, overall points and total HL scores. Many mechanical, civil and electrical engineering courses are more likely to require Mathematics and Physics than Design Technology, although this must be verified for each university.

Product design and industrial design courses vary more. Some value DT as relevant preparation, while others emphasize a portfolio without requiring DT HL. Architecture may prioritize a portfolio, Mathematics or Physics, while computer science commonly places greater importance on the Mathematics course and level.

Create a shortlist and record each degree's required subjects, HL grades, total points and portfolio conditions. If requirements for your application year are unavailable, contact admissions and treat current criteria as guidance rather than a guarantee. The guides on Design Technology and university applications and how DT complements Mathematics and Physics provide useful starting points, but official university pages remain decisive.

How to make the decision

Dropping is reasonable when HL-only content takes time from required university subjects, your intended degrees do not require DT HL, or the move creates a more sustainable three-HL programme. It should not be an automatic response to one difficult test.

Ask four questions:

  1. Will the new combination remain valid for the full Diploma?
  2. Does any realistic university choice require or prefer DT HL?
  3. What timetable benefit will the school actually provide?
  4. Are your difficulties caused by HL-only content, or by the shared IA and theory?

The guide to combining Design Technology with demanding HL subjects can support this workload comparison.

What to do after the change

Once approved, obtain written confirmation of your levels and effective date. Collect the SL teaching sequence, assessment calendar and examination guidance, then separate shared SL materials from HL-only notes.

Confirm how earlier tests affect predicted grades and review your design project against the unchanged criteria. Use the released timetable periods for a specific weekly purpose rather than unstructured catch-up. The RevisionDojo Design Technology subject hub provides syllabus-aligned Study Notes, Flashcards and Questionbank practice for reorganizing M28 revision.

Conclusion

Dropping Design Technology from HL to SL removes the HL extension, reduces recommended teaching time and lowers external-assessment demand. It does not remove the two-paper structure or shorten the 50-hour design project, which becomes 40% of the SL grade.

Check your three-HL minimum, Diploma combination, university prerequisites and school procedures before committing. RevisionDojo's subject hub and IA guidance can then help you rebuild your study plan around the correct SL requirements.
