For M28 students who began DP1 in August 2026, you can drop Math AA HL for economics, but only if the replacement mathematics level meets the entry requirements of every university course you may pursue. For quantitative economics programmes, dropping AA HL can remove important options.

The decision should consider university eligibility, likely grades, your full IB subject combination, timetable restrictions and school approval. Difficulty alone is not enough reason to switch.

How economics programmes view IB mathematics

Economics degrees differ considerably in mathematical intensity. Some use calculus, optimisation, statistics and econometrics from the beginning, while others include more policy, business or social science content.

Published mathematics requirementEffect of dropping AA HL
AA HL is requiredYou would normally become ineligible
HL mathematics is required, with AA HL or AI HL acceptedAA SL would not qualify, but AI HL might
AA HL is preferred or recommendedYou may remain eligible but be less prepared
AA SL is accepted with a specified gradeSwitching may preserve eligibility
No mathematics level is statedConfirm directly rather than assuming acceptance

Current examples demonstrate this variation. LSE lists Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL for several mathematics-intensive programmes. The University of Bath's published 2027 requirements explicitly require AA HL for Economics and Mathematics, while its Economics BSc may consider applicants with a sufficiently strong AA SL grade. Bath does not accept AI SL for that route.

These are examples, not a permanent admissions list. M28 students will apply after the currently published 2027 cycle, and universities may revise their conditions. Check each official course page before changing subjects, when constructing your application list and again before submitting applications.

Why Math AA HL matters for economics

University economics is often more mathematical than IB Economics. Degree courses can use functions, differentiation, constrained optimisation, probability, matrices, statistics and regression analysis to model choices and interpret data.

AA HL provides more advanced algebra and calculus than AA SL, which explains why selective quantitative programmes frequently require it. However, not every economics degree requires AA HL.

IB Economics HL does not replace a mathematics prerequisite. A university requesting AA HL is assessing mathematical preparation, not simply whether you studied economics. Many universities also do not require school-level economics because they teach introductory theory from the beginning.

RevisionDojo's guides to IB mathematics courses and levels and mathematics choices for business and economics provide useful comparisons, but official university requirements must determine eligibility.

When dropping AA HL may be reasonable

Switching can be sensible when careful research shows that your realistic university choices accept the replacement course. It may also be appropriate when a competitive AA HL grade remains unlikely despite consistent practice, teacher support and work on prerequisite skills.

Do not base the decision on one poor test. Early DP1 can be difficult because AA HL moves quickly and requires flexible algebraic reasoning. Instead, ask:

  • Have several assessments shown the same problem?
  • Are mistakes caused by missing foundations, ineffective study or the HL concepts themselves?
  • What outcome does your mathematics teacher predict with structured support?
  • Which intended university courses require AA HL, AI HL or AA SL?
  • Which subject would become your third HL if mathematics moved to SL?

A lower mathematics level does not automatically create an easier Diploma. Raising another demanding subject to HL, changing timetables or catching up on missed content may make the overall combination less manageable.

When you should be cautious

Do not drop AA HL merely because economics appears to be a social science. Programmes called Economics, Economics and Finance, Econometrics, or Economics and Data Science can have very different prerequisites.

Be particularly cautious if you are considering highly selective economics courses, degrees combined with mathematics or data science, or universities you have not researched. Moving from AA HL to AI SL may restrict options more sharply than moving to AA SL.

If your university plans remain uncertain, AA HL generally preserves more quantitative choices. This is practical advice, not an IB rule or an admission guarantee.

Check that your IB Diploma remains valid

The Diploma Programme includes the core and six subjects. Under the standard structure, students take at least three and no more than four HL subjects, with the remainder at SL.

Students normally select one subject from Groups 1-5, covering language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences and mathematics. The sixth subject is usually an arts subject or another permitted choice from Groups 1-4. Environmental systems and societies can meet both Group 3 and Group 4 requirements under IB subject-selection arrangements.

Moving mathematics from HL to SL does not remove your Group 5 subject. The main issue is retaining at least three HLs. If AA HL is your third HL, another approved subject must move to HL.

Your school must verify the final combination. A choice permitted by the IB may still be unavailable because of class capacity, scheduling or school policy.

Your school controls the switch

Students do not arrange a DP1 subject change directly with the IB. Your DP coordinator and relevant teachers must approve it, and schools establish their own deadlines.

Ask your coordinator to confirm:

  • the subject-change deadline
  • space and timetable compatibility
  • your replacement HL subject
  • missed content and assessments
  • effects on predicted grades or records
  • possible school, textbook or examination fees

There is no universal IB deadline for school-level switches. Schools may close changes early because classes have covered different material, internal assessments have started or examination registration is approaching.

A practical DP1 decision process

First, create a university requirements table containing aspirational, realistic and alternative choices across any countries you may consider.

CourseRequired mathematicsRequired gradeWould the switch qualify?
University and courseAA HL, AI HL, AA SL or unspecifiedPublished conditionYes, no or confirmation needed

Use official university course pages for final decisions. Forums, admissions blogs and old prospectuses may describe another entry cycle.

Second, complete an academic diagnostic using the Math AA Questionbank. Separate conceptual gaps from careless errors, then discuss the evidence with your teacher. The guide to tracking mathematics improvement can help you assess progress across several weeks rather than one test.

Finally, compare complete subject combinations. A strong AA SL grade may be preferable to a very weak AA HL result when a university accepts AA SL, but it cannot satisfy an explicit AA HL requirement.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most serious mistake is switching before researching universities. Returning to AA HL may become impossible once the class moves ahead.

Other errors include assuming Economics HL replaces mathematics, checking only the overall IB points offer, treating every economics degree as equivalent, or overlooking the replacement third HL. Subject prerequisites determine eligibility, so a higher total score with the wrong mathematics level may still fail to qualify.

Conclusion

Drop Math AA HL only after confirming that your likely economics courses accept the replacement and your school approves a valid, workable Diploma combination. AA HL preserves the widest range of quantitative options, while AA SL supports some applications where universities explicitly accept it.

Discuss your evidence with your teacher and DP coordinator before the school deadline. RevisionDojo's Mathematics AA resources and Questionbank can support a short diagnostic and help you judge whether targeted improvement is realistic.
