Can You Take 4 SL Subjects and Only 2 HL Subjects in the IB Diploma?
Under standard International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) regulations, students are required to study six subjects:
- Three at Higher Level (HL)
- Three at Standard Level (SL)
This configuration is the default requirement for earning the full IB Diploma.
Standard Requirement
As a rule, IB students must:
- Take at least three HL subjects
- Take no more than three SL subjects
A subject combination of four SLs and two HLs does not meet standard diploma criteria.
The rationale behind this structure is that Higher Level courses are intended to demonstrate academic depth, sustained engagement, and preparedness for university-level study. HL subjects involve more teaching hours, broader content, and more demanding assessments than SL courses.
Exceptional Circumstances
In limited and clearly documented cases, schools may request permission for a student to take four SL subjects and only two HL subjects. These exceptions are typically considered only when there are significant constraints, such as:
- Serious medical conditions
- Substantial personal or family hardship
- Timetabling limitations or restricted subject availability within the school
In all such cases:
- The student must still complete Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)
- The school’s to the IB Organization for approval
