For IB students sitting exams in May 2028, having started DP1 in August 2026.

The best strategy for reaching top US universities is to pursue the most rigorous IB programme you can handle well, build strong predicted grades, and develop meaningful activities before applications begin in 2027. Your transcript opens the conversation, but essays, recommendations, testing policies, and evidence of genuine contribution determine what the rest of that conversation sounds like.

The uncertainty is real. Use it to build a coherent record, not a decorative one.

Your May 2028 admissions checklist

  • Confirm that your six IB subjects represent appropriate rigour in the context of what your school offers.
  • Learn how and when your school calculates predicted grades.
  • Build repeatable study systems during DP1 rather than attempting a rescue in DP2.
  • Develop 1-3 sustained activities with evidence of contribution, initiative, or intellectual depth.
  • Keep a simple record of projects, responsibilities, decisions, and lessons for future essays.
  • Research each university's testing, financial aid, transcript, and language requirements individually.
  • Create a balanced college list rather than treating Ivy League admission as a predictable reward.
  • Protect your coursework, sleep, and academic integrity as application pressure increases.

How the IB fits US applications for fall 2028 entry

For May 2028 students, the application cycle will usually begin before final IB examinations. Early applications commonly fall in the final months of 2027, while many regular applications are submitted around the beginning of 2028. Exact fall 2028 deadlines have not yet been published by every university, so confirm them on official admissions websites once that cycle opens.

US colleges usually evaluate the IB within the context of your school. Admissions readers can consider your subject selection, SL and HL distribution, grades achieved throughout secondary school, predicted performance, teacher recommendations, and the opportunities actually available to you. A demanding programme matters, but the stronger signal is demanding work completed with sustained competence.

A student entering university in fall 2028 would normally belong to the US college graduating class of 2032, not 2028. Search results can therefore mix high school advice with information for an earlier college cohort.

For a deeper explanation, read what US admissions officers think about the IB Diploma.

Choose rigour that you can sustain

Top universities want to see that you challenged yourself relative to your environment. They do not require every applicant to take the same HL subjects, and an appropriate programme for engineering may look different from one for literature, politics, or visual arts.

Course choice should begin with three questions:

  • Does this combination prepare me for the fields I may study?
  • Is it among the more demanding reasonable options available at my school?
  • Can I perform strongly without sacrificing every other part of my life?

Maximum apparent difficulty is not the same as maximum admissions value. An unsuitable combination can weaken grades, reduce time for activities, and make thoughtful coursework harder.

If you have a likely academic direction, review university preparation recommendations now. Science, engineering, and quantitative programmes may expect particular mathematics or science preparation, but requirements vary by institution.

Treat predicted grades as accumulated evidence

May-session students normally apply before receiving final IB results. Their schools may therefore provide predicted grades or other current academic information, depending on university requirements and school reporting practices.

Predicted grades are not a separate examination that appears suddenly in DP2. They are teacher judgments based on available evidence and knowledge of IB standards. Each school's evidence, timing, and reporting process may differ, so speak with your coordinator early.

Ask these questions during DP1:

  • Which assessments contribute to school predictions?
  • When are predictions established or reviewed?
  • How are internal assessments and mock examinations considered?
  • What information is included in the school report sent to US colleges?

Then create an evidence loop. Use RevisionDojo's Questionbank to practise a defined syllabus area, review the reasoning behind errors, consult Study Notes where understanding is incomplete, and use Flashcards for facts or processes that need retrieval practice. AI Chat can help you interrogate an explanation, while Grading tools can provide additional practice feedback. Teacher guidance remains decisive for official coursework and school predictions.

Students who want more context can review how IB predicted grades work for early university applications and the difference between predicted and final IB grades.

Build activities around depth, not decoration

An activity becomes meaningful when you stay long enough to become useful. Selective colleges are not simply counting clubs. They want to understand how you spend discretionary time, what you care about, and whether your involvement grew in responsibility or sophistication.

A strong activity might involve sustained research, family responsibilities, paid employment, community service, creative production, sport, leadership, or an independent technical project. Context matters, including finances, health, caregiving, transportation, and available opportunities.

Keep a monthly activity record with four fields: what you did, whom it helped, what changed, and what you learned. This preserves honest details that memory tends to flatten before essay season.

Write essays that add information

Your transcript explains academic performance. Your essays should not merely translate it into adjectives.

The strongest personal writing often focuses on a specific decision, tension, question, relationship, or change in perspective. It shows how you notice the world. An essay does not need trauma, international recognition, or a dramatic ending to matter.

During DP1, collect moments rather than drafting a generic statement. Record the failed experiment, the book that changed your question, or the responsibility nobody saw. By mid-2027, you will have concrete material to consider.

When revising, ask whether the essay provides information unavailable elsewhere in the application. If every sentence could describe thousands of applicants, it needs greater specificity. AI can support brainstorming or flag unclear passages, but it should not replace your authorship or voice. Follow each college's current academic-integrity rules.

Plan for testing without assuming the policy

Standardised-testing requirements have changed repeatedly across US institutions. Some universities require SAT or ACT results, some remain test optional, and others use different policies. International applicants may also face separate English-proficiency requirements.

Policies for every fall 2028 applicant are not yet available as of October 2026. Take a diagnostic SAT or ACT if accessible, then decide whether preparation belongs in your schedule. Do not let speculative testing preparation damage your IB transcript.

Create a university research sheet with a source and date for every policy. Recheck official admissions pages when the 2027-2028 cycle opens rather than treating blogs or discussion forums as final authorities.

Know which May 2028 IB documents apply

Official IB curriculum updates currently confirm that the revised Extended Essay has first assessment in May 2027. May 2028 candidates therefore use that updated framework. The revised History course has first assessment in May 2028, so students taking History in this cohort should use the corresponding new subject guide and materials provided by their school.

Not every DP subject changes in the same year. Confirm the first-assessment date printed on each relevant subject guide with your teacher or coordinator rather than assuming that every online resource matches your syllabus. The complete May 2028 examination schedule, session-specific procedures, and May 2028 grade boundaries are not yet published. Boundaries from another session cannot promise a future result.

RevisionDojo's resources can help you organise preparation around the applicable syllabus. Predicted Papers and Mock Exams are most useful as timed diagnostic tools, not forecasts of exact questions. The Coursework Library can help you understand structure and standards, while Tutors can provide individual support when feedback reveals a persistent gap. For extended writing, start with practical Extended Essay advice for May 2028.

Build a balanced US college list

“Ivy League IB 2028” is not a single admissions category. The eight Ivy League universities make independent decisions, and excellent IB results do not create a shared threshold or guaranteed route into them.

A responsible list should reflect academic fit, affordability, personal preferences, and admissions uncertainty. Include aspirational choices, realistic possibilities, and institutions where admission and cost are more predictable. International students seeking substantial aid should investigate each college's current policy carefully.

Do not confuse selectivity with suitability. A useful university lets you study what matters, afford attendance, and access an environment where you can grow.

If predicted performance develops differently from your initial target, use guidance for when predicted grades do not match a target university rather than hiding from the evidence. A well-researched adjustment is strategy, not surrender.

A two-year plan that protects grades and perspective

The quiet advantage is consistency. DP1 should establish subject knowledge, teacher relationships, activity depth, and accurate tracking. Use the summer before DP2 for university research, relevant testing, essay reflection, and unfinished coursework. Early DP2 can then become refinement rather than emergency construction.

RevisionDojo brings the academic side of that plan together. Questionbank practice exposes gaps, Study Notes and Flashcards support review, AI Chat helps clarify questions, and Grading tools make feedback easier to act upon. Predicted Papers, Mock Exams, the Coursework Library, and Tutors can support later stages without turning preparation into disconnected piles of material.

The goal is not to manufacture a flawless applicant. It is to become a stronger student and more useful person, then describe that development clearly. Create a free RevisionDojo account, make one May 2028 progress plan, and record the next action for each of your six subjects.
