MYP Physics grading can look more complicated than the physics itself. A child brings home a 5 out of 8, then receives a 6 out of 7 on a report. It is reasonable to wonder whether the numbers have changed meaning.
They have. The simplest parents guide to MYP Physics grading is this: teachers assess four scientific capabilities, each on a 0--8 scale. Those criterion levels are then combined to produce an overall subject grade from 1 to 7. Students are assessed against published performance descriptions rather than ranked against classmates.
Once you separate criterion levels from the final grade, the system becomes calmer. You can focus on what your child needs to demonstrate next without becoming their second physics teacher.

What the four MYP Physics criteria measure
A physics grade records more than formula recall. It considers whether a student can understand ideas, design investigations, interpret evidence and examine how science affects the world.

A student may be confident with calculations yet receive different levels across the criteria. Strong Criterion A work does not automatically demonstrate that the student can evaluate experimental limitations in Criterion C. The variation is a diagnosis, not an inconsistency.

Why 4 out of 8 does not mean 50%
Criterion levels describe the quality of demonstrated performance. They are not conventional percentages.
Descriptors are grouped into bands such as 1--2, 3--4, 5--6 and 7--8. Teachers review the evidence and select the level that best fits the relevant description. Higher bands may require more accurate explanation, independence, justification or application in unfamiliar situations. They do not simply require twice as many correct facts.
Teachers consider an appropriate body of evidence when determining achievement. A weak early attempt need not define the year if later work demonstrates growth. One assignment also may not assess every criterion.
How criterion levels become a final grade
For an internal report, the four criterion levels may be added into a total out of 32 and converted into a grade from 1 to 7. Many schools use the following boundaries, although parents should confirm the school's reporting policy.

Suppose a student receives A=7, B=4, C=5 and D=6. The total is 22, but the useful conversation concerns Criterion B. The student may understand forces while needing to justify variables, data collection or investigation methods.

Official MYP eAssessment is different. Students seeking formal course results in Physics complete an on-screen examination, and the IB sets subject-specific boundaries for each session. Families should not apply an internal 32-point conversion table to an official examination mark.
How to read a Physics report calmly
Start with the criteria rather than the headline grade. Ask:
- Which criterion is strongest?
- Which offers the clearest improvement opportunity?
- What specific wording appears in the feedback?
Turn that feedback into an observable action. “Improve physics” is too broad. “Label graph axes with quantities and units” is useful. So is “justify why control variables must remain constant.”
If the feedback remains unclear, ask the teacher which criterion should be prioritized and what evidence would show progress. This keeps the conversation focused on learning rather than negotiating marks.
Supporting your child without adding pressure

You do not need to remember every circuit rule. Ask, “What evidence supports that conclusion?” or “Why did you choose this equation?” Explaining reasoning aloud can reveal gaps without turning home into another classroom.
