Introduction
The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) eAssessments mark an important milestone in a student’s IB journey. Introduced in 2016, these digital on-screen exams and portfolio submissions are designed to measure understanding, not memorization.
Unlike traditional exams, MYP eAssessments test how well students apply knowledge, analyze information, and think critically. This article provides clear, practical strategies for students preparing for these assessments — from managing time to mastering digital tools — to achieve success confidently and calmly.
What Are MYP eAssessments?
The MYP eAssessments are optional external evaluations offered by the International Baccalaureate (IB) at the end of MYP Year 5. They allow students to earn the official MYP Certificate and provide internationally recognized evidence of achievement.
There are two main types of eAssessments:
- On-screen exams (two hours each): Conducted digitally for subjects like Mathematics, Sciences, Language and Literature, and Individuals and Societies.
- ePortfolios: Project-based submissions for subjects like Design, Visual Arts, and Physical and Health Education.
Both are marked externally by IB examiners, ensuring consistency and fairness across schools worldwide.
What Do eAssessments Measure?
The goal of MYP eAssessments is to evaluate conceptual understanding and application of knowledge — not just factual recall. They test how students can:
- Apply skills in new, unfamiliar contexts.
- Synthesize ideas across disciplines.
- Think critically and creatively.
- Communicate effectively through writing, visuals, and data.
- Reflect on ethical and real-world implications of learning.
In short, eAssessments measure how deeply students understand and concepts work, not just they know.
