For M28 students: IB exams in May 2028, started DP1 in August 2026.

Yes, you can often move up to IB Global Politics HL during DP1, particularly early in the year. Your school must approve the change, accommodate the HL timetable, and confirm that your subject combination satisfies IB Diploma requirements.

Moving from SL is more manageable than starting a new subject because much content is shared. The main challenges are catching up on the HL extension, preparing for Paper 3, and meeting additional engagement-project expectations.

When moving to Global Politics HL is realistic

A switch is most realistic during the first weeks or months of DP1, before substantial extension work has been completed. Strong analytical writing, interest in political issues, and willingness to complete missed work independently support your request.

A later switch may remain possible, but the workload increases as HL students develop case studies and practise Paper 3. Ask your teacher exactly what you have missed rather than judging the gap by elapsed time alone.

School approval and deadlines

Subject and level changes are managed by your school, normally through the DP coordinator, teacher, and timetable team. Schools set internal deadlines and may refuse a change because of class capacity, timetable clashes, or excessive missed content.

Ask your coordinator to confirm:

  • The school's level-change deadline and available class places
  • Additional HL lessons and potential timetable clashes
  • Effects on your complete Diploma subject combination
  • Missed content and catch-up deadlines
  • Any textbook, administration, registration, or examination fees

Your official level must match the teaching, internal assessment requirements, and examination papers for which your school registers you.

How to make a clear request

Bring a short proposal to your teacher rather than simply asking whether switching is possible. Explain why the subject suits your interests, identify your current HL subjects, and show where additional lessons and independent study would fit into your week. Include a recent piece of assessed work so the discussion can focus on your analytical skills as well as your enthusiasm.

Ask for a written list of outstanding work and a review date. This gives you a concrete basis for deciding whether the change is sustainable and helps your teacher distinguish an achievable catch-up plan from an optimistic promise.

Check the IB Diploma rules before switching

A standard Diploma package contains six subjects plus the core. Students normally cover Groups 1-5, then take an arts subject or another permitted subject instead.

RequirementMeaning for your change
HL subjectsStudents take at least three, but no more than four, subjects at HL.
Global PoliticsIt remains a Group 3 individuals and societies subject at either level.
Group coverageYour revised combination must still meet the Diploma's subject-group requirements.
ESSEnvironmental systems and societies can meet both Group 3 and Group 4 requirements.

Moving Global Politics up changes your HL balance, not its subject group. If the change would give you five HLs, another subject must move down or your programme must otherwise be adjusted.

The IB recommends 240 teaching hours for HL and 150 for SL. This 90-hour difference makes timetable access important. The official Global Politics guide, first assessed in 2026, explains the course structure relevant to M28 students.

What HL-only content must you catch up on?

SL and HL share the unifying theme of people, power and politics. Their thematic studies include rights and justice, development and sustainability, and peace and conflict.

HL adds global political challenges, with 80 recommended teaching hours. The eight prescribed areas are borders, environment, equality, health, identity, poverty, security, and technology. Students investigate selected challenges through detailed case studies, not just definitions or general current affairs.

Paper 3 preparation

Paper 3 is HL only and uses stimulus material connected to the extension. Students apply political concepts, perspectives, and evidence from researched case studies.

Catching up therefore requires more than copying notes. Establish which challenges your class studies, which cases it uses, and how those cases connect across contexts. RevisionDojo's Paper 3 Study Notes explain the paper's demands, while its case-study preparation notes support evidence organisation.

The engagement project at HL

Both levels complete an engagement project exploring a political issue through engagement and complementary research. At HL, additional expectations include further research supporting a focused, evidence-based recommendation.

Ask whether your existing project idea can meet these requirements. A recommendation should emerge from your investigation and analysis, not appear as an unsupported addition to an SL-style report. Clarifying this early helps you collect relevant evidence rather than trying to retrofit the project later.

Timetable problems that can prevent the change

Some schools combine SL and HL for shared content and schedule separate extension lessons; others run separate classes. You must be able to attend the additional teaching in either arrangement.

Request the proposed timetable before agreeing to changes. Check extension periods as well as ordinary lessons, because fixed option blocks may affect another subject. Regularly missing HL lessons and promising independent catch-up is rarely sustainable.

A practical four-week catch-up plan

Your teacher should identify the precise gaps because schools sequence topics differently. This is a suggested framework, not an IB requirement or a guarantee that four weeks will be sufficient.

WeekMain taskEvidence of progress
1Collect missed resources, deadlines, and selected challenges; review Paper 3.A lesson checklist and catch-up calendar.
2Study the first missed challenge and its case study.A sheet identifying actors, power, perspectives, evidence, and contested claims.
3Study another challenge and connect the cases.A comparison grid with evidence and conceptual links.
4Attempt a timed Paper 3 response and review project requirements.Teacher feedback and a corrected response or outline.

Keep case-study notes analytical: record the political issue, actors, levels of analysis, competing perspectives, evidence, and its limitations. News summaries alone are insufficient unless you can use them to construct and evaluate arguments.

For example, a case about access to water could connect environment, equality, and security. Instead of listing events, explain who controls access, how decisions affect different communities, and which claims about rights or development are contested. Separate evidence from interpretation, and note when a source represents a government's position rather than an independent assessment.

Then practise using the same evidence to answer different questions. A useful case study should help you evaluate an argument, not become a memorised paragraph inserted regardless of the task. This approach makes your catch-up work more transferable when an examination stimulus introduces an unfamiliar context.

The RevisionDojo Global Politics resource hub brings together course materials. Use syllabus-aligned Study Notes for specific gaps, then the HL extension Questionbank for targeted practice.

Common mistakes and the final decision

Do not treat HL as simply more shared content. Its extension requires distinct research and examination preparation, even if your SL performance is strong.

Do not switch solely because HL sounds better for university. Check the official entry requirements for likely courses: the right choice depends on your whole subject combination and achievable grades.

Finally, consider your coursework calendar, Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and CAS commitments. Ask your teacher what evidence would demonstrate readiness, such as a completed case-study analysis and a satisfactory Paper 3 response. A trial period may be possible, but it is a school decision, not an IB entitlement. Agree on an end date and measurable expectations if one is offered.

Conclusion

Moving to IB Global Politics HL in DP1 can be manageable, especially early, but approval depends on your school's timetable, deadlines, capacity, and your Diploma balance. Confirm the missed extension work and engagement-project expectations before committing. Then agree on a realistic catch-up plan with your teacher. RevisionDojo's Study Notes and Questionbank can support that plan through focused review and practice.
