For IB students sitting exams in May 2028 (started DP1 in August 2026).
To learn how to get a 7 in IB Business Management 2028, build accurate subject knowledge, apply it closely to each case, evaluate competing options and practise producing complete answers under time pressure. Your final result will depend on performance across the written papers and internal assessment, so no single component should be treated as expendable.
Business Management can initially feel like a subject in which knowing enough definitions should be enough. It is not. Definitions open the door, but application, analysis and judgement are what carry an answer into the strongest markbands.
The encouraging part is that these are trainable skills. With two academic years available, you can improve them through deliberate practice rather than relying on a dramatic revision sprint in April 2028.
The 7-level checklist
A student working toward the IB Business Management top grade should be able to:
- define syllabus terminology precisely and concisely
- select relevant theories and tools rather than listing everything remembered
- apply each argument to details from the stimulus or organization
- explain chains of cause and effect
- perform calculations accurately and interpret the result
- compare benefits, costs, stakeholder effects and time horizons
- reach a justified conclusion that answers the exact question
- manage time according to the available marks
- produce an evidence-led IA using one conceptual lens
- identify recurring weaknesses through marked, timed practice
RevisionDojo brings those tasks together through its IB Business Management resources, including Study Notes, Flashcards, AI Chat, grading tools, Predicted Papers, Mock Exams, a Coursework Library and access to Tutors.
Which syllabus applies to May 2028?
As checked on 21 October 2026, the applicable public framework is the IB Business Management guide with first assessment in 2024. The current official IB Business Management subject page and its SL and HL subject briefs describe the assessment model below.
The IB had not publicly announced a replacement Business Management guide specifically for first assessment in May 2028. The subject-specific May 2028 examination timetable, May 2028 Paper 1 pre-released statement, examination questions and grade boundaries were also not yet published. Your teacher and programme coordinator should check the IB Programme Resource Centre for subsequent amendments, because schools may receive operational guidance that is not available on public pages.
Do not build a target around an invented grade boundary. Boundaries can vary by session and level. Build performance that is resilient across every component instead.
| Component | SL | HL | What it assesses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 1 hour 30 minutes, 35% | 1 hour 30 minutes, 25% | A pre-released statement and an unseen case study |
| Paper 2 | 1 hour 30 minutes, 35% | 1 hour 45 minutes, 30% | Unseen stimulus, including quantitative work and extended response |
| Paper 3 | Not applicable | 1 hour 15 minutes, 25% | An unseen social enterprise scenario |
| Internal assessment | 30% | 20% | A business research project on a real organizational issue |
What 7-level performance looks like across the papers
A top response is not simply longer. It makes more useful decisions per paragraph. The student chooses an appropriate concept, attaches it to evidence, develops its business consequence and then tests the argument against an alternative.
Paper 1: turn preparation into application
Under the current guide, Paper 1 is shared by SL and HL. The pre-released statement is issued approximately three months before the examination and provides context for an unseen case study. The guide allocates up to five hours of research time, so the aim is focused familiarity, not an enormous dossier of memorized facts.
When the May 2028 statement appears, define unfamiliar terminology, understand the industry and connect likely issues to Units 1-5. Do not prepare rigid answers. The decisive evidence will still come from the unseen case.
Consider this fictional prompt: Discuss whether Northstar Cycles should outsource bicycle-frame production.
A weak response says outsourcing lowers costs but may reduce quality. A stronger paragraph might read:
Outsourcing could lower Northstar Cycles' fixed operating costs because it would not need to expand its own factory. This may improve cash flow while demand is uncertain. However, the case states that Northstar differentiates itself through reliable custom frames. Dependence on an external supplier could therefore cause quality variation or slower customization, weakening the firm's unique selling proposition. The decision depends on whether the supplier contract includes enforceable quality standards and whether expected savings outweigh the long-term reputational risk.
The annotations are built into the logic. Lower fixed costs identifies the benefit, cash flow while demand is uncertain applies it, however introduces balance, and the decision depends on creates a conditional judgement.

Paper 2: calculate, interpret and decide
Paper 2 uses unseen stimulus and has a stronger quantitative focus. Accuracy matters, but calculation without interpretation leaves valuable analysis unfinished.
Suppose a fictional company has fixed costs of $120,000, a selling price of $50 and variable costs of $30 per unit. Its break-even output is:
A 7-level response does not stop at 6,000. It might add: The firm must sell 6,000 units before making a profit. Because forecast sales are only 6,400 units, its margin of safety is 400 units, suggesting considerable exposure to a small fall in demand.
That final sentence converts arithmetic into a decision-relevant insight. Use the same pattern for profitability ratios, liquidity, investment appraisal and other syllabus calculations: formula, working, answer, unit, interpretation.
Use IB Business Management Study Notes to repair conceptual gaps, then move quickly into the Business Management Questionbank. Flashcards support accurate recall, but written questions reveal whether you can use that knowledge.
Paper 3 at HL: recommend a coherent plan
HL Paper 3 presents unseen resources about a social enterprise. Students identify a human need, explain organizational challenges and recommend a plan of action. Strong responses recognize that a social enterprise has to manage both its mission and its financial or operational constraints.
Imagine a fictional enterprise that trains unemployed young adults to repair donated laptops. An effective plan might propose securing a three-year corporate donation agreement, introducing a modest repair service and tracking both trainee completion and cash flow.
The recommendation becomes persuasive when its parts connect. Corporate donations stabilize device supply. Repair revenue reduces reliance on grants. Impact measures help communicate social value to partners. Evaluation should then confront tensions: charging customers may support financial sustainability, but prices must remain consistent with the needs of the community being served.
Use all relevant resources rather than treating each as a separate mini-question. Practise with Business Management Predicted Papers and timed Mock Exams only after you have learned the response structure. Simulation is most useful when it exposes a specific weakness you can correct.
How to build a high-quality Business Management IA
For both SL and HL, the current IA is an individual business research project about a real issue or problem affecting one organization. It must use exactly one of four key concepts as its lens: change, creativity, ethics or sustainability. The maximum length is 1,800 words.
A strong research question is narrow enough to answer with available evidence. Should Company X expand? is usually too broad. A more workable question would identify the organization, strategic decision, market or operation and relevant period.
Your conceptual lens should shape the analysis, not appear only in the title. An ethics-focused project, for example, should examine the effects of a decision on relevant stakeholders and explore genuine conflicts rather than repeatedly inserting the word “ethics.”
Select supporting documents for their relevance, depth and range. Extract usable evidence before choosing tools. SWOT, force field analysis, ratio analysis or decision trees are valuable only when they help answer the research question. A decorative framework earns less analytical value than one carefully interpreted figure.
Use the Business Management IA criteria guide and Business Management IA exemplars to understand structure and standards without copying another student's approach. RevisionDojo's Coursework Library and grading tools can help you identify missing evaluation, while your teacher remains the authority on permitted feedback and academic integrity.
A two-year plan for May 2028
| Period | Main objective | Weekly or monthly action |
|---|---|---|
| Aug-Dec 2026 | Build foundations | After each topic, create a one-page concept map and answer one applied question |
| Jan-Jun 2027 | Develop analysis | Complete one extended response every two weeks and maintain an error log |
| Jun-Aug 2027 | Prepare the IA | Confirm the organization, question, evidence access and conceptual lens with your teacher |
| Aug-Dec 2027 | Integrate the course | Mix questions across Units 1-5 and complete the IA according to your school's deadline |
| Jan-Feb 2028 | Prepare Paper 1 | Research the official pre-released context once issued and connect it to the syllabus |
| Mar-Apr 2028 | Build examination reliability | Alternate targeted practice with timed papers, then correct every answer |
| Final weeks | Consolidate | Review recurring errors, key calculations and decision frameworks without adding unnecessary resources |
The most valuable habit is an error log. Classify each lost mark as a knowledge, application, analysis, evaluation, calculation or timing problem. Then prescribe a correction. “Revise finance” is vague; “complete three investment appraisal questions and explain each result in context” is actionable.
RevisionDojo works best as a loop. Learn through Study Notes and Flashcards, clarify uncertainty through AI Chat or Tutors, write under realistic conditions, and use grading tools to diagnose the next weakness. Model Business Management essays can show how strong reasoning is organized, but improvement comes from producing and revising your own response.
The quiet advantage of consistency
Getting a 7 in IB Business Management is less about sounding sophisticated than seeing decisions clearly. Businesses face trade-offs. Strong candidates identify them, use evidence to weigh them and explain why a recommendation fits this organization at this moment.
Two years gives you enough time to make that thinking habitual. RevisionDojo provides the connected resources needed to move from learning content to applying it, receiving feedback and performing under pressure.
Your next step is specific: open the IB Business Management Questionbank, choose one topic you completed this week, answer one extended-response question without notes and record the first weakness revealed by the feedback.
