IB Dance Topics: Full List refers to three official syllabus components: composition and analysis, world dance studies, and performance. These are not simply three theory units. Together, they assess your ability to create choreography, investigate dance across cultures, and communicate through technically and expressively controlled performance.
IB Dance is a Diploma Programme arts subject available at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). The official course requires 150 teaching hours at SL and 240 hours at HL. This guide explains every major topic within the three components, shows how each component is assessed, and clarifies the differences between the two levels.
Understanding the IB Dance syllabus
The IB describes dance as expressive movement practised by people from varied backgrounds and for different purposes. Consequently, the course does not prescribe a fixed list of styles such as ballet, contemporary dance, hip-hop, Bharatanatyam, or flamenco. Schools may teach different traditions depending on teacher expertise, student interests, cultural context, and available resources.
This flexibility is important. IB Dance assesses transferable understanding, including how movement is composed, how dance operates within cultures, and how performers communicate intention. Studying one named style in class does not mean that style is an official syllabus topic.
The complete curriculum structure is:
| Official component | Principal areas of study | Suggested hours at SL | Suggested hours at HL |
|---|---|---|---|
| Composition and analysis | Original choreography, compositional craft, structure, intention, analysis, and reflection | 60 | 90 |
| World dance studies | Practical and theoretical exploration of dances from multiple cultures or traditions, followed by individual investigation | 30 | 60 |
| Performance | Technique, movement quality, interpretation, expression, and communication with performers and audiences | 60 | 90 |
| Total | Integrated creative, cultural, analytical, and performance study | 150 | 240 |
Topic 1: Composition and analysis
Composition and analysis develops your ability to create original dance works and explain how your choices support meaning. It combines experimentation in the studio with deliberate choreographic decision-making.
Choreographic intention and movement material
A composition normally begins with an intention, subject, stimulus, question, or idea. You then generate movement that communicates or investigates that intention rather than assembling attractive steps without a clear purpose.
Relevant topics include:
- generating and selecting original movement material
- developing motifs through repetition, variation, fragmentation, inversion, or changes of scale
- using improvisation as a creative method
- shaping relationships among dancers
- selecting accompaniment, sound, silence, objects, or performance spaces
- revising material after observation and feedback
For example, a dance concerned with social isolation might use restricted pathways, interrupted contact, and widening distances between performers. Strong composition occurs when such choices serve the intention consistently.
Dance elements and compositional structure
Students examine how the body relates to space, time, dynamics, and movement qualities. Spatial topics include level, direction, pathway, focus, proximity, shape, and use of the performance area. Time includes duration, rhythm, tempo, accent, stillness, and phrasing, while dynamics concern qualities such as sustained, percussive, heavy, light, direct, or free movement.
You also study how movement is organized into a coherent form. Possible structures include binary, ternary, rondo, narrative, episodic, theme and variation, or an intentionally non-linear arrangement. These are creative possibilities rather than a compulsory IB checklist.
Analysis and critical reflection
Analysis means explaining relationships between intention, process, form, and outcome. A useful reflection identifies a compositional problem, explains the decision made in response, evaluates its effect, and considers how the work could develop further.
For assessment, SL students compose two dance works totalling 6-10 minutes and submit an analytical statement of no more than 800 words about one work. HL students compose three works totalling 8-15 minutes and submit a statement of no more than 1,000 words. At HL, two works must demonstrate compositional contrast, and the statement must analyse connections among the course’s three components.
Topic 2: World dance studies
World dance studies develops comparative knowledge of dance styles from more than one culture or tradition. It requires both practical exploration and theoretical investigation, so cultural background should inform how movement is observed and understood.
Cultural and historical context
Students explore why, where, when, and by whom dances are performed. This can involve social identity, ceremony, spirituality, entertainment, resistance, migration, gender, community, professionalization, or transmission between generations.
Historical context should not become a detached timeline. Its purpose is to explain why a dance developed particular functions, movement characteristics, performance conventions, or meanings. Students should also investigate how a tradition operates today, including changes caused by globalization, technology, staged presentation, tourism, or diaspora communities where relevant.
Comparative movement analysis
The investigation considers the body and its use of space, time, and dynamics. Rather than writing two separate descriptions, you should compare corresponding features and explain their significance.
A focused comparison might examine how two traditions use rhythm to organize collective identity. Another might compare the relationship between performer and audience, provided the discussion remains grounded in specific movement and reliable cultural evidence.
The formal dance investigation compares two dance styles drawn from different cultures or traditions, one familiar and one unfamiliar to the student. The maximum length is 1,500 words at SL and 2,500 words at HL. HL students additionally provide an in-depth comparative discussion of two short dance excerpts, one from each selected culture or tradition.
Use scholarly books, journal articles, interviews, archives, cultural institutions, and credible recordings where possible. Avoid treating a culture as uniform or timeless, and distinguish evidence from your interpretation. RevisionDojo’s guidance on IB Dance can help you organize the component, but your investigation still needs properly attributed independent sources.
Topic 3: Performance
Performance develops technical proficiency and expressive communication. The objective is not to reproduce steps mechanically, but to interpret the intention and stylistic demands of each work with control.
Technical and expressive skills
The performance curriculum can include:
- alignment, balance, coordination, strength, mobility, and control
- rhythmic accuracy, musicality, phrasing, and timing
- spatial awareness, focus, projection, and clarity of line
- appropriate dynamic and movement qualities
- sensitivity to stylistic conventions
- communication with partners, ensembles, and audiences
- interpretation of the choreographer’s intention
- rehearsal discipline, safe practice, and response to feedback
Technical difficulty alone does not guarantee a strong result. A simpler phrase performed with precise timing, clear dynamics, and convincing interpretation may communicate more effectively than complex material performed without control.
Performance assessment
Performance is the internally assessed component, meaning it is marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB. Students present their work at an open showing and submit a recording.
At SL, students perform one or two dances totalling 3-6 minutes. At HL, they perform two or three dances totalling 6-9 minutes. At both levels, at least one dance must be a solo or duet, and at least half of the total assessed time must be devoted to solo or duet work.
How assessment differs between SL and HL
The same three topics are studied at both levels, but HL requires more extensive composition, research, performance, and synthesis.
| Assessment component | SL requirement | HL requirement | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Composition and analysis | 2 works, 6-10 minutes; statement up to 800 words | 3 works, 8-15 minutes; statement up to 1,000 words, contrast and course connections required | SL 40%; HL 35% |
| Dance investigation | Report up to 1,500 words | Report up to 2,500 words plus detailed comparison of two excerpts | SL 20%; HL 25% |
| Performance | 1-2 dances, 3-6 minutes | 2-3 dances, 6-9 minutes | 40% at both levels |
Composition and the dance investigation are externally assessed. Performance is internally assessed and externally moderated. There is no conventional final written examination listed in the official Dance assessment model, so sustained coursework management matters throughout the course.
Students considering HL should not judge the difference only by additional minutes and words. HL expects stronger synthesis, more developed comparison, greater choreographic range, and a longer body of performance evidence. RevisionDojo’s overview of HL and SL arts courses provides further context for that decision.
Practical ways to study the IB Dance topics
Keep a process record from the beginning, even when a particular notebook is not itself submitted. After each rehearsal, note the intention, movement explored, feedback received, revisions made, and reasons for accepting or rejecting suggestions. Short video clips can reveal spatial, timing, and dynamic issues that are difficult to notice while dancing.
For world dance studies, create a comparison grid with rows for historical context, present context, function, body, space, time, dynamics, costume, music, and performer-audience relationships. Record full bibliographic details immediately. This prevents unsupported description and makes comparative paragraphs easier to plan.
Use criterion-based feedback rather than asking whether a work is simply “good.” Questions about the clarity of intention, appropriateness of movement qualities, or effectiveness of structure produce more useful revisions. RevisionDojo’s guide to feedback in Group 6 explains how to make this review cycle systematic.
Common mistakes include choosing movement before defining an intention, narrating the creative process without evaluating it, describing two traditions separately rather than comparing them, and leaving performance recording until the final attempt. Students should also avoid relying on generic cultural claims or assuming that every practitioner interprets a tradition identically.
Conclusion
The full IB Dance topics list consists of composition and analysis, world dance studies, and performance. Success depends on connecting these areas: cultural understanding informs interpretation, performance experience informs choreography, and analytical reflection improves both.
Plan assessed work early, preserve evidence of creative decisions, and check all current instructions with your teacher and IB coordinator.
