What Is the Highest Possible Score on an IB Exam?
In the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, the highest possible score you can earn on any individual IB exam is a 7.
Every IB subject—whether taken at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL)—is graded on a 1–7 scale, with 7 representing excellent performance. This scale is consistent across all six subjects in the IB Diploma.
IB Grade Scale Explained
- 7 – Excellent
- 6 – Very Good
- 5 – Good
- 4 – Satisfactory
- 3 or below – Limited / Failing level
A 7 indicates strong conceptual understanding, accurate subject knowledge, effective analysis, and clear communication under exam conditions.
How Is the IB Diploma Score Calculated?
While a 7 is the highest score for an individual exam, the IB Diploma is scored using a points system that combines subject grades and core components.
To earn the full IB Diploma, students must complete:
- 6 IB subjects, each graded from 1–7
- 3 core components:
- Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
- Extended Essay (EE)
- Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS – required, but not graded)
