An IB subscription is worth paying for when your child uses it consistently to solve specific learning problems. Genuine value appears when the platform leads to active practice, useful feedback, corrected mistakes, and stronger independent performance, not simply more time spent reading notes or watching explanations.

Parents do not need to monitor every session or understand every IB subject. This IB tool value check explains what evidence to look for, how to discuss progress, and when cancelling or downgrading may be sensible.

What value means for an IB student

The Diploma Programme combines examinations with internally and externally assessed coursework. The IB's Diploma Programme assessment overview explains that most subjects include written examinations, while internal assessments, theory of knowledge, and the extended essay require sustained work over time.

A useful subscription should therefore help your child:

  • understand difficult concepts accurately
  • retrieve knowledge without notes
  • apply knowledge to IB-style questions
  • interpret feedback and mark schemes
  • correct recurring mistakes
  • practise under timed conditions
  • manage coursework without replacing independent thinking

Do not ask only, “How many hours did you use it?” A student can spend hours rereading material without improving. A better question is, “What can you now do independently that you could not do before?”

The parent checklist: is the IB subscription worth it?

Review these indicators every four to six weeks. Ask your child to show one or two examples rather than requesting access to every activity.

Value indicatorUseful evidenceWarning sign
Regular usePurposeful sessions across several weeksActivity occurs only before tests
Clear purposeA named topic, skill, or weakness is being addressedThe student uses whatever appears first
Active practiceQuestions, retrieval, or written responsesMost time is spent reading or watching
Actionable feedbackFeedback explains why marks were lostOnly scores or generic praise are provided
Mistake correctionIncorrect work is reviewed and attempted againAnswers are checked once and forgotten
Exam relevanceTasks match the correct subject, level, and syllabusMaterial is generic or outdated
Independent transferNew questions are completed without assistanceSuccess depends on hints or AI
Timed practicePapers or sections are attempted under realistic limitsEvery task uses unlimited support
Coursework integrityCriteria are explained without writing the workGenerated text is copied into coursework
Visible progressWeaknesses narrow or performance becomes more stableThe same problems continue despite high usage

A subscription does not need to satisfy every row immediately. After sustained use, however, you should see evidence in most categories.

Ask your child five questions

A short, curious conversation usually reveals more than a dashboard:

  1. Which topic has the subscription helped you improve?
  2. Can you show me a question you initially got wrong and later corrected?
  3. What feedback changed how you answer IB questions?
  4. Which feature do you use most, and why?
  5. What would become harder if we cancelled?

Specific answers indicate purposeful use. If your child can identify a weakness, show relevant feedback, and explain the correction, the subscription is probably contributing to learning. Statements such as “it has lots of resources” provide much weaker evidence.

Check whether the right features are being used

A broad platform can offer poor value if your child uses only one feature with a free equivalent. Match the tool to the actual need:

  • Weak understanding: Study Notes or Jojo AI should lead to an explanation in the student's own words.
  • Poor recall: Flashcards should be reviewed over time, not completed once.
  • Low exam marks: Questionbank practice should identify patterns involving topics, command terms, or technique.
  • Timing problems: Mock Exams or Predicted Papers should improve completion under realistic limits.
  • Unclear coursework criteria: IA Feedback or Coursework Review should guide the student's own revisions.
  • Uncertain academic position: A Grade Predictor can inform planning, but it cannot guarantee results.

RevisionDojo combines Study Notes, Flashcards, Questionbank practice, Mock Exams, and Jojo AI. An effective sequence is to review a concept, retrieve it from memory, complete targeted Questionbank practice, correct mistakes, and retest later. Near examinations, timed mock practice can assess pacing and independent performance.

Look for progress, but interpret data carefully

Useful indicators include improving test marks, fewer repeated errors, stronger teacher comments, faster completion, and clearer explanations. Predicted grades can contribute to the picture, but one score or platform estimate should not determine your judgment.

In RevisionDojo's 2026 State of Learning Survey of 2,975 students and teachers, 78.7% of students reported that their average subject grade increased, with an average self-reported rise of 0.57 points. These observational findings do not prove that the platform caused the changes or guarantee similar results for every student.

Compare several forms of evidence over time. A pattern across school assessments, independent practice, and teacher feedback is more meaningful than one improved result.

Check AI use and academic integrity

AI can explain concepts, diagnose errors, and create practice, but it should not complete assessed work. The IB's academic integrity guidance requires submitted work to represent the student's authentic abilities and requires appropriate acknowledgment of AI-generated material used in assessed work.

With Jojo AI, use the sequence attempt, diagnose, retry, and retest. The student should attempt the problem first, request a limited explanation, retry without help, and later apply the skill to a new question. Routinely receiving complete answers can increase dependence rather than competence.

When cancellation or a downgrade makes sense

Consider changing the subscription if paid features remain unused, your child cannot identify a specific benefit, or equivalent support is already available through school. Cancellation may also be appropriate if the platform does not match the correct subjects, levels, syllabus, or assessment formats.

Before deciding, try a four-week routine with measurable expectations, such as two targeted practice sessions and one mistake-review session each week. Judge the resulting evidence rather than intentions.

Conclusion

An IB subscription is worth it when it produces regular active practice, specific feedback, corrected mistakes, and stronger independent performance. It offers poor value when it becomes an unused library, encourages passive reading, or replaces the student's own thinking.

Parents can evaluate value without micromanaging by reviewing concrete examples every few weeks. RevisionDojo's support for parents and families explains how the Questionbank, Jojo AI, Study Notes, Flashcards, and Mock Exams can support a structured study routine.
