How much is the IB Language B individual oral worth for first assessment 2029?

The individual oral is worth 25% of the final IB Language B grade at both SL and HL. It is classified as the internally assessed component of the course. The other 75% comes from external assessment, including productive writing and receptive listening and reading tasks. Because one quarter of the final result depends on the oral, it should be practised consistently rather than left until the final weeks. Students should develop presentation, listening, and conversational skills throughout the course.

What is the difference between the SL and HL Language B individual oral?

At SL, the student presentation is based on a visual stimulus, while at HL it is based on a literary extract. HL students are required to study two literary works originally written in the target language as part of the course. Both levels then include a studentteacher discussion and a conversation involving at least one additional course theme. The overall weighting is 25% at both levels. The distinction lies primarily in the nature of the starting material and the expected complexity of communication.

How long is the FA 2029 Language B individual oral?

The public IB subject brief for first assessment 2029 confirms the three-part format but does not state the detailed timing of each section. Students should obtain the official timing and preparation instructions from their teacher using the current FA 2029 guide. Timings published for the first-assessment-2020 course should not automatically be treated as current requirements. Nevertheless, timed practice remains essential because students must balance a presentation with two stages of discussion. Practise using only the timing confirmed by your school for the new course.

Do I need to discuss a target-language culture in the oral?

Cultural understanding is central to IB Language B because the course develops communication across interpersonal and intercultural contexts. A strong response connects the visual, extract, or discussion topic to a relevant community where the target language is used. The connection should be specific and accurate rather than a broad national stereotype. You might discuss a policy, tradition, social debate, artistic work, community practice, or lived experience. Cultural material should support your interpretation instead of appearing as an unrelated memorized fact.

Can I memorize my Language B oral presentation?

Memorizing a complete presentation is not an effective strategy because the stimulus or extract requires a specific response. The discussion stages also require spontaneous listening and adaptation, which a script cannot provide. It is more useful to memorize connectors, repair phrases, thematic vocabulary, and reliable ways of developing an answer. Practise organizing unfamiliar material quickly and speaking from concise prompts under the conditions confirmed by your teacher. This creates controlled flexibility rather than dependence on exact wording.

How can I practise for the conversation section of the individual oral?

Ask a teacher, classmate, tutor, or Jojo AI to give you unpredictable questions across all five prescribed themes. Answer each question with a position, a reason, an example, and an explanation of why the point matters. Record the exchange and identify where your answers become repetitive, vague, or too short. Practise clarification phrases so that you can request repetition or reformulate an idea without abandoning the conversation. Rotate themes regularly because the final conversation must include at least one theme additional to the one connected with the opening material.

IB Language B Individual Oral: FA 2029 Guide

• 23 Jul 2026•12

The IB Language B individual oral is the internally assessed speaking component for Standard Level and Higher Level. For first assessment 2029, it contributes 25% of the final grade and assesses productive, receptive, and interactive communication through three connected parts: a student presentation, a student and teacher discussion, and a conversation covering at least one additional course theme.

At SL, the presentation is based on a visual stimulus. At HL, it is based on a literary extract from a work studied during the course. This article explains the confirmed FA 2029 structure, what each part demands, how SL differs from HL, and how to prepare without relying on outdated oral requirements.

What is the IB Language B individual oral?

The individual oral is the only internally assessed component of IB Language B. According to the official Language B subject brief for first assessment 2029, the assessment covers three types of communication:

Productive skills: presenting and expressing ideas clearly in the target language
Receptive skills: understanding the stimulus, extract, and teacher's questions
Interactive skills: responding, developing ideas, and sustaining a conversation

Calling it a presentation alone is therefore misleading. The prepared opening matters, but students must also understand questions in real time, adapt their answers, clarify meaning, and contribute independently to the exchange.

The oral is an internal assessment, meaning it is conducted and assessed through the school under IB procedures. Students should follow the FA 2029 subject guide and instructions provided by their teacher rather than assuming that timings, note rules, or mark allocations from the previous syllabus remain unchanged.

The three parts of the FA 2029 individual oral

Part	What happens	Main communication demands
Student presentation	The student responds to a visual stimulus at SL or a literary extract at HL.	Organization, relevance, vocabulary, grammatical control, pronunciation, interpretation
Student and teacher discussion	The teacher asks questions connected to the presentation material and ideas.	Listening, explanation, justification, clarification, spontaneous development
Conversation on an additional theme	The exchange broadens to include at least one other course theme.	Flexibility, thematic knowledge, personal and cultural perspectives, sustained interaction

The publicly available FA 2029 subject brief confirms this three-part structure and the 25% weighting, but it does not publish detailed timings or preparation-note rules. Students should not automatically transfer timings such as 12-15 minutes or particular bullet-point limits from resources written for the earlier course. Your teacher should provide the current operational requirements from the full guide.

SL and HL individual oral differences

The broad assessment structure is identical at SL and HL. The difference is the material that provides the starting point and the level of language and interpretation expected.

Feature	Language B SL	Language B HL
Presentation stimulus	Visual stimulus	Literary extract
Immediate task	Describe, interpret, and develop ideas arising from the visual	Present and interpret the extract in relation to its ideas and literary context
Course literature requirement	No equivalent requirement stated	Two literary works originally written in the target language are required in the course
Shared later stages	Student and teacher discussion and conversation involving at least one additional theme	Student and teacher discussion and conversation involving at least one additional theme
Weighting	25%	25%

What SL students should do with a visual stimulus

A weak SL response merely inventories visible objects: “There are three people, a building, and a bicycle.” A stronger response moves from observation to interpretation and significance.

For example, an image of commuters using bicycles could support this sequence:

Identify the setting, people, actions, and important visual details.
Infer the situation or message suggested by those details.
Connect the image to sharing the planet, urban planning, or environmental responsibility.
Discuss a relevant target-language culture or community.
offer a reasoned personal view, comparison, or possible solution.

The stimulus must remain central. A memorized speech about climate change that barely addresses the image does not demonstrate careful receptive engagement.

What HL students should do with a literary extract

HL students should establish what is occurring in the extract, identify significant ideas or tensions, and support interpretations with precise textual details. Context from the wider work can clarify the passage, but plot summary should not replace engagement with the extract itself.

For instance, an extract showing conflict between a young person and their family might allow discussion of identity, generational expectations, tradition, migration, or belonging. A strong presentation explains how particular words, interactions, narrative choices, or contrasts create meaning. It then connects that meaning to the work and relevant cultural context without turning the task into a Language A-style technical commentary.

The five prescribed IB Language B themes

The FA 2029 course retains five prescribed themes, which provide contexts for the presentation and conversation:

Identities
Experiences
Human ingenuity
Social organization
Sharing the planet

Recommended topics beneath these themes are not automatically separate prescribed themes. For example, education fits under social organization, while technology fits under human ingenuity. The final conversation must include at least one additional course theme, so preparation should cover all five rather than only a student's strongest topic.

Students can review the broader course structure through RevisionDojo's IB Language B syllabus breakdown. Theme vocabulary should be learned as usable phrases and arguments, not isolated word lists.

What effective communication looks like

The FA 2029 assessment objectives emphasize clear and effective communication, appropriate language, fluency and accuracy, organized ideas, and the ability to understand, analyse, and reflect on texts. In practice, a strong oral usually demonstrates the following qualities:

Vocabulary is varied but natural and relevant.
Grammar supports precise meaning rather than displaying complexity for its own sake.
Ideas follow a clear line of development.
Interpretations refer directly to the visual or extract.
Answers include reasons, examples, consequences, or comparisons.
The student listens carefully and responds to the actual question.
Communication continues even when the student needs to rephrase or correct an error.

Fluency does not mean speaking rapidly or making no mistakes. It means communicating with enough control that hesitation and errors do not repeatedly obstruct meaning.

How to prepare effectively

Build flexible theme knowledge

For each prescribed theme, prepare a bank of examples involving the target-language culture or cultures, your own context, and a wider international perspective. Practise explaining causes, consequences, competing viewpoints, and possible solutions.

RevisionDojo's Language B speaking strategies and oral-practice guide provide useful structures for repeated speaking practice. Flashcards can reinforce connectors and thematic phrases, while Jojo AI can ask unpredictable follow-up questions in the target language.

Use an answer-development pattern

For discussion questions, use a flexible sequence such as:

Answer: state your position directly.
Reason: explain why you hold it.
Example: provide cultural, textual, personal, or real-world evidence.
Significance: explain the consequence or why the point matters.

RevisionDojo's discussion-skills notes show how structured expansion prevents one-sentence answers. The structure should guide your thinking without making every response sound formulaic.

Record complete simulations

Practise all three stages without pausing or restarting. Afterwards, check whether you addressed the stimulus closely, developed answers, varied your language, handled the theme transition, and sustained interaction.

Use the current timings and conditions supplied by your teacher. The practical strategies in RevisionDojo's oral exam preparation checklist remain useful, but any syllabus-specific timing information should be checked against FA 2029 instructions.

Common mistakes to avoid

Memorizing a universal speech: this produces irrelevant answers when the material or question changes.
Describing without interpreting: visible or textual details need explanation and thematic significance.
Ignoring the target-language culture: cultural knowledge should be accurate, relevant, and integrated naturally.
Giving one-sentence answers: interaction requires development, not an interview of disconnected replies.
Forcing advanced vocabulary: inaccurate sophistication is less effective than controlled, precise language.
Preparing only one theme: the final conversation includes at least one additional course theme.
Using old rules as if they were FA 2029 rules: confirm timings, preparation procedures, and assessment criteria with your teacher.

Conclusion

The FA 2029 IB Language B individual oral is a 25% internally assessed component that tests productive, receptive, and interactive skills. SL students begin with a visual stimulus, HL students begin with a literary extract, and both levels continue through a studentteacher discussion and a conversation involving at least one additional theme.

Successful preparation combines close engagement with the stimulus, accurate and flexible language, cultural understanding, and regular spontaneous conversation. RevisionDojo can support this process through Study Notes, Flashcards, Questionbank practice, Jojo AI follow-up questions, Mock Exams, and Tutors for targeted speaking feedback.
