Paper 2 has the largest individual weighting, but neglecting Paper 1B would be a mistake because data analysis appears across the assessment model. Prioritise papers and specimen materials written for the syllabus first assessed in 2025. There is no reliable list of biological topics guaranteed to appear. The official model permits broad coverage, and Paper 1B addresses all four themes. Your personal error data is therefore more useful than a prediction about a supposedly certain topic.
Identify weaknesses with evidence
Do not classify a topic as strong because its notes look familiar. Test it without notes using three to five questions or a blank-page recall exercise. What was tested: the precise concept or skill.
Why the answer failed: knowledge gap, misread command term, weak data use, calculation error or imprecise language.
What the method was: the sequence needed to reach the answer.
What earns credit: the distinct biological points or evidence required.
How to prevent recurrence: one short rule written in your own words.
Suppose a question asks you to explain why increasing temperature initially raises enzyme activity. The method is not simply to memorize “more kinetic energy.” A complete chain connects higher kinetic energy to more frequent successful collisions, increased enzyme-substrate complex formation and a higher reaction rate. If the question extends beyond the optimum, the explanation must address disruption of interactions maintaining tertiary structure, alteration of the active site and reduced binding.
After studying a worked solution, close it and reproduce the answer from memory. For experimental evaluation, avoid generic comments such as “human error” or “repeat the experiment.” Identify a specific limitation, explain how it could affect the result, and propose a feasible improvement that addresses it. Paper 2 extended responses
Extended responses reward organized biological understanding rather than length alone. Before writing, spend a short period listing the processes, structures, examples and connections relevant to every part of the selected question. Follow the command term and build separate creditworthy points without contradicting yourself.
Use precise causal links. Instead of writing “water enters the plant,” identify movement by osmosis down a water potential gradient, the relevant partially permeable membranes, and the consequence for cell turgor where appropriate. Diagrams can support an answer when they are clear and labelled, but they should not replace requested explanation.
