Using Supervisor Feedback Effectively in the IB Internal Assessment and Extended Essay
Feedback on the IB Internal Assessment (IA) or Extended Essay (EE) is a critical component of the learning process. When used properly, it supports intellectual initiative, reflective thinking, and academic improvement—qualities explicitly valued by the International Baccalaureate.
The purpose of supervisor feedback is not to correct work for students, but to guide them toward stronger reasoning, clearer structure, and more effective use of evidence. The following strategies outline how to engage with feedback in a way that strengthens the final submission while maintaining academic integrity.
Submitting a Complete Draft
Students should submit a full, carefully prepared draft rather than partial sections. A complete draft allows supervisors to comment on higher-level issues such as argument coherence, focus of the research question, depth of analysis, and methodological soundness.
Well-developed drafts enable feedback that is analytical rather than superficial, increasing its usefulness for meaningful revision.
Understanding the Nature of Permitted Feedback
IB supervisors are allowed to provide open-ended, non-editing guidance. This may include:
- Observations about the clarity or consistency of the argument
- Questions that prompt reflection on the scope or focus of the research question
- General suggestions related to structure, analysis, or evaluation
Supervisors are not permitted to:
- Edit sentences or correct grammar
