What Is Niche Tourism (Adventure Tourism; Movie Location Tourism; Heritage Tourism)?

Niche tourism is tourism designed for a specialized market whose participants share a particular interest, motivation or preferred activity. Adventure tourism, movie location tourism and heritage tourism are three niche forms used by countries to attract specific international visitor groups.

This topic belongs to Option E: Leisure, tourism and sport, subtopic E.3, which is available to both SL and HL students studying this option. The syllabus focuses on niche national tourism strategies that have a global sphere of influence.

TypeMeaning and geographic significance
Adventure tourismTravel involving physical activity, challenge or perceived risk, often in distinctive natural environments. Mountains, rivers, deserts or coastlines become tourism resources, but visitor growth may create environmental pressure and safety concerns.
Movie location tourismTravel motivated by films or television programmes associated with a particular location. Media exposure can transform a previously less-visited place into an international hotspot, increasing income and employment while potentially causing congestion or loss of local identity.
Heritage tourismTravel focused on cultural or historical resources, including monuments, architecture, traditions, archaeological sites and cultural landscapes. It can fund conservation and strengthen identity, but commercialization may reduce authenticity or exclude local communities.

These strategies allow a country to differentiate itself from competing destinations. They may increase international visibility, attract higher-spending visitors and distribute tourism beyond established resorts. Their success depends on accessibility, marketing, political stability, infrastructure and the quality or uniqueness of the tourism resource.

A common misconception is that niche tourism must be small-scale. “Niche” describes a specialized market, not necessarily visitor numbers: successful media or heritage promotion can attract a large global audience.

Exam technique: For an explain question, identify one niche strategy and develop a clear causal chain linking the attraction to international visitor growth and geographic impacts. For an evaluative response, consider benefits and costs for different stakeholders and support the argument with a named place studied in your course.
