What's the Difference Between Primary and Secondary Touristic Resources?

Primary touristic resources are pre-existing features that attract visitors, whereas secondary touristic resources are facilities and services created specifically for tourism. The distinction depends on original purpose, not whether a resource is natural or human-made.

How the Classification Works

Primary resources give tourists a reason to visit. They include natural features such as climate, beaches, mountains and ecosystems, plus human features such as historic buildings, religious sites and cultural landscapes. A cathedral built for worship can therefore be primary because it was not originally constructed for tourists.

Secondary resources make tourism accessible or enjoyable. They include accommodation, catering, visitor information, entertainment and tourist transport. Theme parks may become major attractions, but remain secondary when purpose-built for tourism.

Primary resourcesSecondary resources
Existed before tourism or created for another purposeCreated specifically to serve or attract tourists
Natural landscapes, climate, ecosystems and beachesHotels, resorts, restaurants and campsites
Heritage buildings, religious sites and local cultureTheme parks, visitor centres and tourist transport
Usually provides the original attractionSupports access, longer stays and visitor spending

The two categories are interdependent. Attractive primary resources generate visitor demand, while investment in secondary resources increases a destination's accessibility, capacity and sphere of influence. However, excessive secondary development can damage the primary resource. For example, resort construction may degrade the coastal landscape that originally attracted visitors.

A common misconception is that all human-made attractions are secondary. This is incorrect: a historic castle is primary if built for defence, whereas a purpose-built heritage-themed attraction is secondary.

IB Exam Technique

This distinction is in Option E.2 for SL and HL. For identify or outline, classify the resource and justify your choice using original purpose. For explain, link both resource types to the growth of a tourism hotspot. Use a named destination from your course.
