How does the study planner work?

Updated August 6, 2026

It turns one subject, its topics and your exam date into a day-by-day schedule of questions, notes, lessons, videos and flashcards, at /study-planner.

What a study plan gives you

Each plan covers one subject. It runs from the start date you choose to the exam date on the plan, and it spreads the work across the weekdays you study on, at roughly the number of minutes a day you asked for. Topics you rate as harder get more of that time.

Every item in the plan opens the resource it names, so a Questions item opens the question bank and a Flashcards item opens that topic's flashcards. Tick items off as you finish them, and drag an item onto another day when your week changes. You can view a plan by Week or by Month. The study planner page shows all of your plans together, and your home page has its own Study plan section.

You do not need a paid plan to use the study planner, and building a plan costs no energy. The resources a plan sends you to keep their own weekly limits. Teacher accounts do not see the study planner in the sidebar.

Open the study planner

Set up a plan

  1. Open the study planner and choose Add Study Plan. On your first plan the button says Create Study Plan.
  2. Choose what you are planning for, then Next. IB DP students can pick an official exam session, which fills in the real papers and paper dates, or Assessment/Exam for a class test.
  3. Pick the subject. Only subjects you have added to your account, in the curriculum you are currently in, appear here, and a subject we have no topics for yet is left out. For IB DP you also confirm your level, if we do not have it already.
  4. Pick the topics you want to cover, or set your goal grade if you chose an exam session.
  5. Set the start date, and the exam date if you are planning for a class test. Then choose the weekdays you study on and how many minutes a day you can give it. The suggested amount is worked out from your topics, your dates and your weekdays.
  6. Rate how confident you feel about each group of topics. On a class-test plan you can choose Skip instead. On an exam session plan the ratings are required.
  7. Choose Create Study Plan.

Building the plan happens in the background and usually takes a couple of minutes. Plans with many topics or a distant exam date take longer. You can close the page and come back, and the plan appears when it is ready.

You can have one active plan per subject for each kind of plan. If a subject is greyed out with Study plan exists, delete the old plan for that subject before you build a new one.

Change or remove a plan

Open a plan and use the menu next to its title to Rename or Delete it. On a wide screen the same menu sits on each plan in the Upcoming Assessments & Deadlines list. Deleting a plan also deletes every item inside it, and that cannot be undone.

Once a plan passes its exam date it moves into Expired study plans at the bottom of the page, so it is still there to look back at. Plans are shown for the curriculum you are currently in, so if you switch curriculum you see that curriculum's plans instead. In the mobile app, the same plans are under the Planner tab.
