What is energy and how do I get more?

What energy is

Energy is the shared allowance that pays for AI actions on a free account. A free account gets 10 energy a week. The lightning bolt in the top bar shows what you have left, and opening it shows what each action costs under Energy costs and usage. The most common costs are:

• Unlocking a topic's notes, lesson or flashcards: 3 energy each
• Chatting with Jojo: 1 energy per 15-minute session
• Grading one question bank answer: 1 energy
• Coursework feedback: 5 energy for a draft, 10 for a finished piece

Other AI tools cost energy too, and the dropdown shows what each one costs next to it.

Opening a question bank question and writing an answer costs no energy. Only sending it to be graded spends energy.

Unlocking a topic is permanent

Energy is not the first thing you spend. A free account opens 3 notes, 3 lessons and 5 flashcard decks each week at no cost. Once that weekly allowance is used, the paywall offers 3 energy to unlock instead.

Either way, the unlock is permanent. Once a topic is open it stays open: it does not close at the end of the week, it is not counted against next week's allowance, and it never costs energy a second time. You can go back to it as often as you want.

Jojo chat is charged per session

Chatting with Jojo costs 1 energy per session, not per message. Your first message opens a 15-minute session in that chat. Everything you send while the session is open is free, and each message pushes the 15 minutes out again, so a long back and forth stays on the one charge.

Starting a new chat opens a new session and costs 1 energy. Coming back to a chat you left more than 15 minutes ago also costs 1 energy, because that session has closed.

How to get more energy

Energy refills once a week. Open the lightning bolt in the top bar to see how much the next refill adds and how long is left. Energy cannot be bought on its own and there is no way to earn extra, so on a free account the weekly refill is the only way to get more.

Unused energy does not build up. The bar tops out at 10, so a quiet week still leaves you with 10 the next week, not 20. There is nothing to save up for.

Plus and Pro both make energy unlimited. Nothing you do spends it, and the counter stops showing in the top bar because there is no balance left to watch. Unlocks are only recorded on a free account, and topics you opened before you subscribed are still open if you later go back to Free.
