How do notes, lessons and flashcards work?

Updated August 6, 2026

They are three of the resources on a subject page. A free account opens 3 notes, 3 lessons and 5 flashcard decks each week, and every unlock is permanent for that topic.

What each one is

All three are opened from a subject page, one topic at a time. The subject page shows a card for each resource the subject has, and once you are inside one, the tab row along the top moves you between them.

  • Notes are written explanations of a topic, read chapter by chapter. On subjects that have a full textbook, that same tab is named Textbook instead.
  • Lessons are interactive. Rather than reading, you work through cards that ask you to answer questions, match terms, fill in blanks and put steps in the right order.
  • Flashcards are a deck of question and answer cards for one topic. Study flashcards starts a session. On the subject's Flashcards tab, Select topics lets you study several topics in one sitting.

A subject shows only the resources it already has content for, so if one of these is nowhere on your subject page, that is missing content rather than a paywall.

What you can open each week

A free account opens 3 notes, 3 lessons and 5 flashcard decks each week. Each unlock covers one topic. The counts reset every week, and anything you do not use does not carry over.

When a weekly count runs out, the page tells you how many you have used and offers to unlock that topic for 3 energy instead. Plus and Pro remove these caps: notes, lessons and flashcards are unlimited on both.

Unlocks stay unlocked

Once you have opened a topic's notes, lesson or flashcards, they stay open for good. Coming back to that topic never uses another one of your weekly allowances and never costs energy again. That is true whether you opened it with the weekly allowance or paid energy for it.

The notes, the lesson and the flashcards for one topic are three separate unlocks against three separate weekly allowances. Opening a topic's notes does not open its lesson or its flashcards.

How flashcard reviews are scheduled

Flashcards use spaced repetition. After you turn a card over you rate it Again, Hard, Good or Easy, and each button shows when that card will come back. Keep getting a card right and the gap between reviews grows. Rate it Again and it returns in about ten minutes. The keys 1 to 4 do the same as the four buttons.

Cards you have rated come back on their own schedule. Your review queue collects everything that is due across your IB subjects, and a review session covers one subject at a time.
