MYP Physics assessment is criterion-related. In school-based assessment, teachers judge students against four science criteria, awarding a final achievement level from 0 to 8 for each. Each criterion contains several strands. An assessment task must provide a genuine opportunity to demonstrate the relevant strands rather than awarding levels for isolated keywords.
Criterion A is not limited to recalling formulas. Using correctly demonstrates application, but stronger work may also interpret wave data, explain the underlying physics, and evaluate a claim from evidence.
Criteria B and C assess different stages of investigation. Criterion B concerns planning a defensible method, while Criterion C concerns analysing results and evaluating what the evidence shows. Criterion D is not a general opinion task: conclusions must use accurate physics and consider relevant social, environmental, ethical, economic, political, or cultural implications.
How school-based MYP Physics assessment works
Teachers collect evidence through laboratory investigations, tests, data-analysis exercises, presentations, research tasks, and extended scientific responses. Individual assignments may assess one criterion or several criteria, depending on their design.
Teachers award criterion levels using best-fit professional judgment. They compare the evidence with descriptor bands of 1–2, 3–4, 5–6, and 7–8. A level of 0 means the work does not reach the standard described by the lowest band.
A percentage does not convert automatically into a criterion level. Scoring 75% on a test, for example, does not necessarily produce Criterion A level 6. The teacher must identify what the response demonstrates against the applicable descriptor.
When determining final levels, teachers consider the available evidence and give appropriate attention to sustained and recent achievement. Final criterion levels should not normally be calculated as simple averages. If a student progresses from Criterion C levels of 3 to 5 and then 7, the final level may be 7 if the latest task provides sufficient evidence of that standard.

How the MYP Physics eAssessment works
The MYP Physics eAssessment is an optional external assessment for eligible Year 5 students registered by an IB World School. It is separate from ordinary school-based assessment and is not compulsory for every MYP student.
The current public subject brief describes a two-hour on-screen examination structured as follows:

Although B and C appear within one 50-mark investigation section, all four criteria are equally weighted overall. Each criterion represents approximately 25% of the assessment evidence. The IB notes that an examination may vary slightly from its blueprint, so schools should consult the official materials for the relevant session.
Questions may include calculations, short answers, graphing, data interpretation, experimental planning, simulations, and extended writing. Students must therefore apply physics in unfamiliar settings, analyse evidence, and evaluate experimental limitations rather than relying only on factual recall.
MYP Physics eAssessment grade boundaries
External grade boundaries are different from the internal table out of 32. Examiners first produce a raw examination total, after which the IB applies the Physics boundaries for that subject and session.
Boundaries can change between May and November sessions or from one year to another. The IB considers examiner judgment, candidate work, statistical evidence, and established grade standards, so unofficial online boundaries should not be treated as guaranteed targets.
For example, a hypothetical total of 73/100 might receive grade 6 if that session's grade 6 boundary were 68 and its grade 7 boundary were 79. Those figures are illustrative only. The actual grade must come from the official session-specific table.
For the full MYP certificate, the IB grading and awards requirements require at least 28 points across eight required components, at least grade 3 in each component, and completion of the service requirement.
Common assessment mistakes
Students often prepare only for Criterion A. Equations and definitions matter, but they do not prepare students to design investigations, process data, evaluate methods, or discuss the implications of physics.
Common problems include:
- giving a hypothesis without scientific reasoning
- naming variables without explaining how they are measured or controlled
- drawing graphs without units, labels, or sensible scales
- describing trends without numerical evidence
- writing vague limitations such as “human error”
- proposing improvements that do not address the identified limitation
- discussing an application without accurate supporting physics
- failing to document Criterion D sources consistently
Students should check the task-specific rubric because not every assignment assesses all four criteria.
How to prepare effectively
Organize revision around both physics content and criterion skills. After studying forces, for example, complete a calculation, design an investigation, interpret a data set, and evaluate a real application. This develops the different forms of reasoning required across Criteria A to D.
Command terms also matter. “State,” “describe,” “explain,” “analyse,” and “evaluate” require different levels of development. A response that merely describes an experimental method will not fully answer a question asking for evaluation.
