It is hard to define a species because evolution produces gradual variation rather than fixed boundaries, and no single species concept applies to every organism. At both SL and HL, understand why shared traits and interbreeding can each give uncertain classifications.
Why Species Boundaries Are Unclear
The morphological species concept groups organisms by observable traits. Yet members of one species may differ with sex, age, genes or environment, while unrelated species may look similar through convergent evolution.
The biological species concept defines a species as organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. It emphasizes reproductive isolation, but geographically separated populations cannot always be tested for potential interbreeding.
During speciation, populations diverge gradually as reproductive isolation and differential selection increase differences. Intermediate populations may fit more than one classification because no single instant clearly marks the formation of two species.
| Difficulty | Why It Causes Uncertainty |
|---|---|
| Variation within a species | Individuals may look different despite belonging to the same species. |
| Similarity between species | Different species may have similar morphological traits. |
| Geographical isolation | Scientists cannot directly test interbreeding between separated populations. |
| Gradual speciation | Reproductive isolation develops over time rather than at a definite moment. |
| Asexual organisms | The interbreeding criterion cannot be applied. |
| Horizontal gene transfer in bacteria | Genes can move between groups without sexual reproduction. |
The final two difficulties are Additional Higher Level (AHL) content. HL students must explain why the biological concept works poorly for asexually reproducing organisms and bacteria that exchange genes horizontally.
A common misconception is that every species has a perfectly objective boundary. Species are useful scientific classifications, but competing concepts can classify the same organisms differently.
Exam Technique
For an explain question, identify a concept and link it causally to a limitation. For distinguish, state a direct difference between both items; defining only one is insufficient.
