Cells have organelles because compartmentalization increases metabolic efficiency and allows incompatible processes to occur simultaneously. One large compartment would provide less control over reaction conditions, substances and enzymes.
The Reasoning
An organelle is a discrete cell subunit adapted to perform a specific function. In IB Biology B2.2, organelles include structures such as nuclei, mitochondria, chloroplasts, vesicles and ribosomes, although not every organelle is membrane-bound.
Membranes divide the cytoplasm into compartments with different internal conditions. Each compartment can contain the enzymes and substrates needed for particular reactions, increasing their local concentrations and therefore the frequency of successful collisions.
Compartmentalization also isolates substances or processes that could interfere with other cellular activities. For example, hydrolytic enzymes can function inside lysosomes or phagocytic vacuoles without digesting components elsewhere in the cell.
| Advantage | Biological mechanism |
|---|---|
| Greater efficiency | Enzymes and metabolites are concentrated in a smaller volume. |
| Separation of incompatible reactions | Membranes prevent particular enzymes or substrates from interacting with the rest of the cytoplasm. |
| Specialized conditions | Compartments can maintain suitable chemical conditions for specific reactions. |
| Improved regulation | Movement across compartment membranes can be controlled. |
| Simultaneous processes | Different metabolic pathways can occur at the same time without interfering. |
A key SL and HL example is separation of the nucleus from the cytoplasm. Transcription occurs in the nucleus, so eukaryotic RNA can undergo post-transcriptional modification before it reaches cytoplasmic ribosomes for translation. In prokaryotes, which lack this separation, ribosomes may begin translating mRNA immediately.
The common misconception is that every organelle is simply a membrane-bound compartment. This is incorrect: ribosomes are organelles but are not surrounded by membranes.
Exam Technique
For an explain question, link each structural feature to a consequence: compartment membrane → concentrated enzymes and substrates → faster, controlled reactions. Avoid merely listing organelles; examiners expect the functional advantages of compartmentalization and a specific example.
