Theoretical models are useful because they simplify complex events, identify patterns, and provide competing explanations. However, every model emphasizes certain actors or causes while overlooking others, so no single model fully explains real-world politics.
How Theoretical Models Help
A theoretical model selects key variables and relationships. Realism emphasizes state survival and military power. It can explain Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine through strategic interests and opposition to Ukraine's closer NATO alignment.
Liberalism emphasizes institutions and cooperation, highlighting sanctions and military support coordinated by the European Union and NATO after the invasion. Together, the perspectives show that competition and interdependence can operate simultaneously.
| Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|
| Simplifies complex events into manageable explanations | May oversimplify events involving many actors and causes |
| Identifies recurring patterns across cases | Patterns may vary across cultural and historical contexts |
| Highlights power, sovereignty, and legitimacy | May privilege some concepts while neglecting others |
| Allows competing interpretations to be evaluated | Evidence may be selected to fit a preferred theory |
Why Models Have Limits
Political outcomes rarely have one cause. Realism addresses Russia's security calculations but gives less attention to identity, historical narratives, domestic politics, and Ukrainian agency. Constructivist or postcolonial perspectives reveal these factors but may predict outcomes less precisely.
Models may reflect bias. State-centered security models prioritize armed conflict. A feminist perspective highlights how the Taliban's August 2021 return to power restricted Afghan women's education and political participation, revealing unequal experiences within states.
A common misconception is that one theory must be proved correct. In IB Global Politics, theories are analytical tools, not complete truths, and no named theory is prescribed content.
Exam Technique
For SL and HL, apply a model to a specific contemporary case, explain what it reveals, and evaluate what it misses. In Paper 2, compare perspectives and reach a justified judgment rather than describing each theory.
