Postcolonial theory argues that contemporary global politics remains shaped by colonialism, even after formal independence. Colonial hierarchies can persist through institutions, economic relationships, cultural assumptions and control over knowledge.
How the Perspective Works
Postcolonial theory challenges Eurocentrism, which treats European experiences as universal. It asks whose knowledge is accepted, whose voices are excluded, and how colonial categories shape decisions.
It broadens power beyond military or economic capacity to include language, identity and representation. Edward Said's concept of Orientalism explains how portrayals of an irrational or dangerous "East" helped justify domination and can still influence foreign policy.

The COP27 case also shows agency: Global South actors can organize collectively and challenge established rules rather than merely experience domination.
A limitation is that postcolonial theory may overemphasize colonial history while underestimating domestic governance, class divisions or strategic competition. The common misconception is that it studies only the colonial past. It instead uses that past to explain present inequalities.
Exam Technique
For both SL and HL, theoretical perspectives are part of the common core, but no named theory is prescribed. In a Paper 2 response, apply the perspective to a contemporary case, link it to , , or , and evaluate both its explanatory value and limitations. A strong paragraph makes a claim, supports it with precise evidence, then explains what the lens reveals and overlooks.
