Identity politics has become more significant because globalization increases contact between groups and gives identity-based movements new tools to mobilize. Rather than eliminating differences, globalization can strengthen political demands based on nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender or other shared identities.
The Reasoning and Mechanisms
Globalization creates interdependence through migration, trade, communication and international institutions. This can produce transnational solidarity, but it can also generate anxiety about cultural change, unequal power and lost political control.
| Globalization mechanism | Effect on identity politics | Contemporary example |
|---|---|---|
| Migration and cultural contact | Groups may defend national, ethnic or religious identities against perceived cultural change. | In the 2016 Brexit campaign, appeals about immigration and British sovereignty supported leaving the European Union. |
| Digital communication | Social media helps identity-based movements organize across borders and challenge established power. | From 2017, #MeToo spread from the United States to India and South Korea, demanding institutional accountability. |
| Global economic integration | Economic grievances may be interpreted through national or cultural identity. | Catalan separatists linked identity and fiscal grievances during Spain's disputed 2017 independence referendum. |
| Perceived cultural homogenization | Global culture can provoke movements protecting distinctive traditions. | India's Bharatiya Janata Party used Hindu nationalism to build electoral legitimacy during the 2024 general election. |
A constructivist perspective explains this because identities are shaped through social interaction rather than fixed. Its limitation is that it may understate material causes such as economic inequality or competition for state resources.
The common misconception is that globalization produces one uniform global culture. In practice, global connections can weaken boundaries while intensifying efforts to defend them.
