Type I pneumocytes are extremely thin alveolar cells adapted for rapid gas exchange, whereas type II pneumocytes contain many secretory vesicles and release surfactant into the alveoli. This is AHL content in IB Biology subtopic B2.3, Cell specialization.
Structure and Function
The alveolar epithelium contains both cell types because gas exchange requires a thin diffusion barrier while the moist alveolar surface must also be prevented from collapsing.
| Feature | Type I pneumocytes | Type II pneumocytes |
|---|---|---|
| Main structural adaptation | Extremely thin, flattened cells | Contain many secretory vesicles called lamellar bodies |
| Main function | Provide a short diffusion distance for oxygen and carbon dioxide | Produce and secrete surfactant into the alveolar lumen |
| Contribution to lung function | Increase the rate of gas exchange by diffusion | Reduce surface tension and help prevent alveolar collapse |
Gas molecules cross type I pneumocytes by simple diffusion. Oxygen moves from alveolar air into the blood, while carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the alveoli. The extreme thinness of these cells reduces diffusion distance, increasing diffusion rate.
Type II pneumocytes release surfactant from lamellar bodies by secretion. Surfactant spreads over the moist internal surface of the alveolus and reduces the attraction between water molecules, lowering surface tension. This helps the alveoli remain open, especially during exhalation.
A common misconception is that type II pneumocytes are the main gas-exchange cells. They are part of the alveolar epithelium, but their key examined specialization is surfactant secretion; type I pneumocytes provide the thin surface specialized for diffusion.
Exam Technique
For an IB distinguish question, state paired differences using both cell types: “Type I pneumocytes are extremely thin to reduce diffusion distance, whereas type II pneumocytes contain lamellar bodies that secrete surfactant.” Link each structural feature directly to its function rather than merely listing features.
