IB grade boundaries are not fixed percentage targets. A grade 7 might begin at 69 in one subject and session, 76 in another, or above 80 in some courses because each boundary reflects the assessment, subject, level, session, and sometimes examination variant involved.

The IB aims to keep the standard represented by a grade consistent, not the mark required to receive it. This article explains how IB grade boundaries by year are set, compares published examples, and shows how to use historical cutoffs without treating them as predictions.

What is an IB grade boundary?

An IB grade boundary is the minimum final mark needed to receive a subject grade from 1 to 7. If the published grade 7 boundary is 76, a final scaled mark of 76 receives a 7, while 75 receives the grade below it.

This does not mean every examination paper must reach 76%. Most Diploma Programme subjects combine components such as examination papers, an internal assessment, an oral, or externally assessed coursework. Marks are scaled using the official component weightings before the final subject boundary is applied.

For example, a subject might calculate its final result as:

(Paper 1 percentage × 0.30) + (Paper 2 percentage × 0.50) + (IA percentage × 0.20)

If the resulting scaled mark is 74 and the session’s grade 7 boundary is 73, the student receives a 7. If another session has a boundary of 76, the same scaled mark would receive a 6.

Students can inspect historical figures through the RevisionDojo IB Grade Boundaries database. Always match the data to the correct subject, level, session, syllabus, and examination variant.

What does an IB grade 7 represent?

A 7 is the highest subject grade, but it does not require perfect work. The IB’s official grade descriptors associate top performance with qualities such as thorough knowledge, sophisticated application, accurate terminology, effective analysis, evaluation, synthesis, and success with challenging problems.

The evidence required varies by subject. A Mathematics 7 depends heavily on constructing arguments, recognizing structures, and solving unfamiliar problems. In language and literature, a 7 requires convincing analysis, developed expression, effective organization, and detailed engagement with texts.

Comparing raw percentages across subjects is therefore misleading. Different courses use different tasks, assessment objectives, markschemes, and weightings. The final grade represents the quality of achievement within a particular course, not an identical percentage standard across the Diploma Programme.

Why IB grade boundaries change each year

The IB finalizes boundaries after assessments have been marked. Its assessment guidance explains that the process uses candidate work, grade descriptors, senior examiner judgment, statistical evidence, and teacher feedback.

Several factors can affect the result:

  • Paper difficulty: One examination may contain more accessible questions or more demanding combinations of skills.
  • Candidate work: Senior examiners review actual responses around important cutoffs, particularly boundaries associated with grades 3, 4, and 7.
  • Markscheme operation: Examiners consider how successfully questions and markschemes distinguish between achievement levels.
  • Statistical evidence: Results are compared with previous sessions and relevant cohort information.
  • Course changes: New syllabuses, component weightings, or exceptional assessment arrangements can reduce comparability with older sessions.
  • Examination variants: Different paper sets may require different boundaries.

IB assessment is criterion-related. Achievement is judged against defined standards rather than by awarding each grade to a predetermined percentage of candidates. Statistical evidence supports standard-setting, but the system is not a simple class rank or fixed quota.

A paper that students find difficult does not automatically produce dramatically lower boundaries. The decision depends on examiner evidence about the paper’s actual demands and the quality of marked responses.

Published IB grade boundaries by year

Published tables show why there is no universal mark for a 7. These examples are final scaled boundaries out of 100 from published Diploma Programme boundary documents and subject reports.

Subject and examination setSessionMinimum final mark for a 7
Chemistry HL, timezone 1May 202273
Chemistry HL, timezone 2May 202269
Chemistry HL, timezone 1May 202377
Chemistry HL, timezone 2May 202376
Chemistry HL, timezone 1May 202476
Chemistry HL, timezone 2May 202477
Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL, timezone 1May 202476
Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL, timezone 2May 202474

Across these Chemistry HL examples, the grade 7 cutoff ranged from 69 to 77, an 8-mark spread. It would be unsafe to conclude that Chemistry permanently became harder after 2022. The 2022 session operated under pandemic-era assessment arrangements, so assessment conditions and syllabus comparability must be considered.

The Mathematics AA HL figures show that variation can occur within one session. In May 2024, the final grade 7 boundary was 76 for timezone 1 and 74 for timezone 2 because the variants used different examination sets. Students must not combine a component boundary from one variant with the final boundary from another.

The RevisionDojo Mathematics AA boundary page organizes historical final and component thresholds. Use these as references and confirm official results information through your school coordinator.

Component and final boundaries are different

A common mistake is assuming that a student must reach the Paper 1 grade 7 boundary to earn a final 7. The final subject grade normally depends on the weighted total across all required components.

Consider a course with two examinations worth 40% each and an IA worth 20%:

ComponentMarkWeightFinal contribution
Paper 170%40%28
Paper 278%40%31.2
Internal assessment85%20%17
Total76.2

This student could earn a final 7 even if Paper 1 fell below its component-level grade 7 boundary, provided the final scaled total met the overall threshold. Strong performance in one component can compensate for weaker performance elsewhere, subject to official weightings and assessment rules.

Component boundaries help evaluate individual practice papers, but component grades are not simply averaged. The RevisionDojo Grade Calculator can model weighted marks, although its result is an estimate rather than an official grade or school prediction.

How to use historical grade boundaries

Historical boundaries are most useful as a range, not a promise. Compare several recent sessions under the same syllabus, at the same level, and with the closest relevant examination variant.

A practical method is:

  1. Complete a full paper under timed, closed-book conditions.
  2. Mark it consistently with the correct markscheme or criteria.
  3. Apply official component weightings instead of adding unlike raw marks.
  4. Compare the scaled result with several relevant historical boundaries.
  5. Set a working target above the recent range.
  6. Diagnose lost marks by topic, command term, method, structure, or timing.

A buffer of several scaled marks is sensible advice, not an IB requirement. If a recent grade 7 range is 74-77, planning around exactly 74 is risky. A target around 79-82 offers more protection against performance variation, imperfect self-marking, or a higher future boundary.

Use the RevisionDojo Questionbank to address specific weaknesses after marking. Timed RevisionDojo mock-exam practice can then test whether that improvement transfers to full-paper conditions.

Common mistakes when interpreting boundaries

  • Assuming 70% always earns a 7: Published cutoffs show that 70 may be sufficient in one session but several marks short in another.
  • Comparing different subjects or levels: HL and SL have different demands. Biology boundaries cannot predict Chemistry boundaries.
  • Ignoring syllabus changes: Older results become less useful when paper structures, weightings, or available marks change.
  • Selecting only the lowest boundary: A defensible estimate uses several recent, comparable sessions rather than the easiest historical cutoff.
  • Treating a mock as an official prediction: One paper cannot reproduce every possible topic or difficulty level. Schools normally use broader evidence when determining predicted grades.
  • Confusing subject grades with the diploma total: Six subjects contribute up to 42 points, while Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay can add up to 3 core points, giving a maximum of 45.

What parents should understand

A boundary increase does not necessarily mean standards became harsher, and a decrease does not mean expectations were lowered. Boundaries translate marks from assessments of varying difficulty into grades intended to represent comparable achievement.

Families should focus on consistent timed performance, accurate marking, correct weightings, and a margin above recent boundaries. After results, the scaled total and distance from the next boundary can inform a discussion about an enquiry upon results, but a remark may raise, lower, or leave a grade unchanged.

Conclusion

IB grade boundaries by year change because the IB seeks to preserve the meaning of grades while examination difficulty and assessment conditions vary. A 7 requires meeting the final boundary for the exact subject, level, session, syllabus, and examination variant, not reaching a universal percentage.

Use historical data to identify a range, calculate weighted totals correctly, and build a margin above recent cutoffs. RevisionDojo’s Grade Boundaries database and Grade Calculator help establish targets, while the Questionbank and Mock Exams support focused preparation.
