For the current IB Biology course, first assessed in 2025, Paper 1 tests rapid decision-making and data analysis, while Paper 2 tests data interpretation, structured explanations, and extended biological reasoning. Paper 1 contains Paper 1A, which is multiple choice, and Paper 1B, which contains data-based questions. Paper 2 has a compulsory section of data-based and short-answer questions followed by a section of extended-response questions.
Both papers assess knowledge, application, and analysis, but they require different exam techniques. Effective preparation therefore means practising Paper 1A, Paper 1B, and Paper 2 as distinct formats rather than treating every Biology question in the same way.
IB Biology Paper 1 vs Paper 2 at a glance
The current assessment structure applies to both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). HL students sit longer papers, answer more questions, and may be assessed on both SL and additional higher level content.
| Feature | Paper 1 | Paper 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Main format | Paper 1A multiple-choice questions and Paper 1B data-based questions | Section A data-based and short-answer questions; Section B extended responses |
| SL duration | 1 hour 30 minutes | 1 hour 30 minutes |
| HL duration | 2 hours | 2 hours 30 minutes |
| SL marks | 55: 30 for 1A and 25 for 1B | 50: 34 for Section A and 16 for Section B |
| HL marks | 75: 40 for 1A and 35 for 1B | 80: 48 for Section A and 32 for Section B |
| Final-grade weighting | 36% | 44% |
| Main skills | Selecting accurate answers, interpreting evidence, calculations, experimental analysis | Data analysis, precise written explanations, synthesis, evaluation, extended reasoning |
| Question choice | All questions are compulsory | SL answers one of two extended-response questions; HL answers two of three |
Together, the two examination papers account for 80% of the final Biology grade. The remaining 20% comes from the internally assessed scientific investigation. These figures are confirmed in the IB’s Biology subject brief and current Biology specimen papers.
What IB Biology Paper 1 tests
Paper 1 is presented as two separate components completed in one examination session. Paper 1A and Paper 1B are not separate exams, and there is no scheduled interruption between them.
Paper 1A: multiple-choice accuracy
Paper 1A contains 30 questions at SL and 40 questions at HL. Each question provides several possible answers, from which students select the best response.
The questions may test:
- Accurate recall of biological facts and terminology
- Understanding of processes, structures, and relationships
- Application of a familiar principle to a short scenario
- Interpretation of diagrams, models, or simple data
- Quantitative reasoning and calculations
- Recognition of common misconceptions
Multiple-choice questions are not purely memory tests. Distractors are often based on statements that are partly correct but do not answer the precise question. For example, all four options might describe real features of membranes, but only one correctly explains why phospholipids form a bilayer in water.
There is no deduction for an incorrect answer, so every question should be answered. A calculator is required for the current Paper 1, unlike under the pre-2025 assessment structure.
Paper 1B: data and experimental work
Paper 1B contains four data-based questions related to experimental work and the syllabus. Students write short responses rather than selecting options.
It can assess your ability to:
- Read graphs, tables, diagrams, and experimental descriptions
- Identify trends, correlations, anomalies, and comparisons
- Calculate values and use appropriate units
- Interpret evidence using biological knowledge
- Identify independent, dependent, and controlled variables
- Evaluate methods, uncertainty, reliability, or limitations
- Suggest scientifically reasonable explanations or improvements
A strong data response combines evidence with interpretation. If a graph shows enzyme activity rising from 10 to 35 units, saying only “activity increased” is less precise than quoting the values and then explaining the increase using collision frequency or molecular movement, where appropriate.
RevisionDojo’s Paper 1B guide for beginners provides additional practice with this evidence-based style.
What IB Biology Paper 2 tests
Paper 2 carries 44% of the final grade, making it the most heavily weighted examination component. It tests whether students can communicate biological understanding clearly, apply concepts to unfamiliar situations, and connect ideas across the course.
Section A: compulsory data and short answers
All questions in Section A are compulsory. The section combines a data-based question with short-answer questions drawn from the relevant SL or HL syllabus.
Unlike Paper 1B, the data may be placed in a more unfamiliar context and integrated with broader biological reasoning. You might be asked first to calculate a percentage change, then describe a relationship, and finally explain that relationship using knowledge of physiology, genetics, ecology, or another part of the course.
Short-answer questions reward precision rather than length. A two-mark explanation normally needs two distinct, relevant ideas or a linked cause-and-effect sequence. Writing everything remembered about the topic wastes time and may obscure the answer.
Section B: extended responses
Section B contains extended-response questions. SL students choose one of two questions, while HL students choose two of three.
These questions assess whether you can:
- Organize several relevant biological points
- Use accurate terminology throughout
- Explain mechanisms as connected sequences
- Compare processes or structures systematically
- Integrate ideas from different syllabus areas
- Support claims with examples, evidence, or labelled diagrams when relevant
- Address every part of a multi-part prompt
An extended response is not a general essay. Marks are awarded for identifiable biological statements that answer the command term. A useful structure is to state the point, explain the mechanism, and connect it directly to the question.
For example, an explanation of water movement through a plant should not merely list “roots, xylem, and stomata.” It should connect water-potential gradients, osmosis into root cells, cohesion within the xylem, evaporation from mesophyll surfaces, and diffusion through stomata.
How the required skills differ
| Skill | Where it matters most | What a strong response does |
|---|---|---|
| Rapid recall | Paper 1A | Retrieves an exact fact without being misled by distractors |
| Elimination | Paper 1A | Rejects options that contradict the stem, units, or biological principle |
| Numerical evidence | Paper 1B and Paper 2 Section A | Quotes values, shows working, and includes units |
| Experimental reasoning | Paper 1B | Connects variables, controls, reliability, and limitations to the investigation |
| Command-term control | Paper 1B and Paper 2 | Matches the depth of the response to words such as state, describe, explain, or evaluate |
| Biological communication | Paper 2 | Uses precise terminology and complete causal links |
| Synthesis | Paper 2 Section B | Connects knowledge from several areas into one coherent response |
| Question selection | Paper 2 Section B | Chooses the option for which the student can produce the greatest number of accurate points |
Both papers test the course’s assessment objectives, so the distinction is not absolute. Paper 1A can require application, while Paper 2 can include direct recall. The important difference is how students must demonstrate their understanding.
How to prepare for Paper 1
For Paper 1A, use short, timed sets rather than relying entirely on full papers. After each set, classify every error as a knowledge gap, misread question, calculation error, or failure to eliminate a distractor. This makes the review more useful than recording only a percentage.
For Paper 1B, practise one data set at a time. Before answering, identify the variables, units, overall trend, exceptions, and biological context. Then compare your wording with a markscheme or worked solution.
A practical weekly routine is:
- Complete 10 to 15 Paper 1A questions under time pressure.
- Correct them without immediately reading the explanation.
- Attempt one Paper 1B data set.
- Rewrite weak answers using exact values and biological reasoning.
- Revisit the same errors several days later.
The IB Biology Questionbank allows students to target particular syllabus areas, while the wider IB Biology resource collection can support content review before another attempt.
How to prepare for Paper 2
Paper 2 preparation should combine content retrieval with written practice. Knowing a process internally does not guarantee that it can be expressed under timed conditions.
For short answers:
- Underline the command term and biological focus.
- Use the mark allocation to estimate the necessary number of points.
- Write direct statements rather than long introductions.
- Include reasons when asked to explain.
- Refer explicitly to supplied evidence when the question is data-based.
For extended responses, spend a brief period planning before writing. List the mechanisms, examples, comparisons, or diagrams that directly address each part of the prompt. This reduces repetition and prevents an apparently detailed answer from omitting one entire section.
Full-paper practice should come after targeted practice. RevisionDojo’s Biology predicted papers can be used for timed simulations, while available model answers and video solutions show how a complete response differs from a plausible but incomplete one. Students preparing at HL can also review the format of a Paper 2 HL practice paper with worked and video solutions.
Common mistakes across both papers
A frequent mistake is using old exam information. Under the current course, first assessed in 2025, Biology has two external examination papers, and the former Paper 3 is no longer part of the assessment. The IB explains this change on its official Biology curriculum update page.
Other common problems include:
- Treating Paper 1A as a test of facts only
- Describing graph patterns without quoting supporting values
- Giving explanations when the command term asks only to state
- Giving descriptions when the question asks why something happens
- Ignoring units, scale, or uncertainty in calculations
- Writing extended responses as unstructured lists
- Choosing a Section B question based on familiarity with one keyword
- Reviewing answers without identifying why marks were lost
Worked solutions matter because two responses can contain similar content but differ sharply in precision. Review not only what the correct answer says, but also how it follows the command term, separates marking points, uses evidence, and avoids irrelevant material.
Conclusion
In the comparison of IB Biology Paper 1 vs Paper 2, Paper 1 emphasizes multiple-choice accuracy, data handling, and experimental analysis, while Paper 2 places greater emphasis on structured explanations and extended reasoning. SL and HL follow the same overall format, but HL includes additional content, more marks, and longer examination times.
Prepare for each component separately, then combine them in full timed papers near the examination. RevisionDojo’s Questionbank is useful for targeted weaknesses, while Biology predicted papers, model answers, Jojo AI, and per-question video solutions can help you compare your reasoning with stronger exam responses.
