Do IB Language B teachers have to teach every recommended topic?

No, teachers do not have to teach every topic appearing in the recommended lists. The official syllabus prescribes the five themes but describes the narrower topics as optional recommended topics. Teachers can choose different topics or introduce suitable alternatives that support language development and intercultural understanding. They must still organize the course around all five prescribed themes. Students should therefore follow their teacher’s course while also developing enough flexibility to handle unfamiliar contexts.

Can an IB Language B exam include a topic my class did not study?

Yes, an examination text or prompt may use a specific context that your class did not study directly. The assessment is based on the five prescribed themes rather than a guaranteed list of narrow topics. You are expected to transfer language skills, vocabulary and reasoning to unfamiliar material. This does not mean that specialist factual knowledge is required before you can answer. Focus on understanding the text or task and use relevant language from the broader theme.

Are all five IB Language B themes compulsory at both SL and HL?

Yes, the five prescribed themes apply to both Language B SL and Language B HL. They are identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organization and sharing the planet. The difference between SL and HL is not that HL receives additional themes. HL expects greater linguistic range and complexity and also requires the study of two literary works originally written in the target language. Both levels should therefore prepare to communicate across the complete thematic framework.

What is the difference between a theme and a topic in IB Language B?

A theme is a broad prescribed area that organizes teaching and assessment, such as identities or human ingenuity. A topic is a narrower context used to explore that area, such as health, technology or migration. All five themes belong to the required structure of the course. The recommended topics are possible teaching routes rather than compulsory content units. Understanding this distinction prevents students from treating the syllabus as a list of facts to memorize.

Why are topics prescribed in language ab initio but optional in Language B?

Language ab initio is designed for beginning learners who benefit from a more structured range of everyday contexts. Its syllabus therefore prescribes four topics under each of the five themes, giving 20 prescribed topics in total. Language B is intended for students who already have previous experience of the target language. Its teachers can choose more varied, demanding and culturally relevant material according to their classes. Both courses retain the same five prescribed themes, but they differ in how much freedom exists beneath them.

How should I revise if IB Language B topics are optional?

Organize revision around the five prescribed themes rather than trying to predict exact examination topics. Build a core vocabulary bank, several adaptable cultural examples and language for comparison, evaluation, causes and solutions under each theme. Practise reading and listening to unfamiliar material so that new contexts do not disrupt your understanding. For writing and speaking, train yourself to adapt ideas to different audiences, purposes and text types. This approach is more reliable than memorizing complete responses for a small number of classroom topics.

Are IB Language B Topics Prescribed or Optional?

• 23 Jul 2026•12

IB Language B uses a flexible thematic syllabus. The five themes are prescribed, but the narrower topics listed beneath them are optional recommended topics, so teachers retain discretion over which topics and examples they teach.

This distinction affects how you should revise. You need broad confidence across all five themes, but you do not need to memorize every recommended topic as though it were a compulsory content checklist.

The short answer: themes are prescribed, topics are optional

The current IB Language B course is organized around five compulsory themes:

Identities
Experiences
Human ingenuity
Social organization
Sharing the planet

According to the official IB Language B curriculum page, these are prescribed for both Standard Level and Higher Level. The syllabus also provides recommended topics and possible questions under each theme, but these are not prescribed.

A teacher must therefore organize the course around all five themes, but can select topics that suit the language, target cultures, students and available resources. One Spanish B class might explore migration through movement between Latin America and Spain, while another might approach the same theme through rural-to-urban migration.

How the IB Language B syllabus is structured

The distinction between a theme and a topic is essential. A theme is a broad conceptual area that organizes the course, while a topic is a more specific context through which students develop their language.

Prescribed theme	Guiding focus	Examples of optional recommended topics
Identities	The nature of the self and what it means to be human	Lifestyles, health and well-being, beliefs and values, subcultures, language and identity
Experiences	Events, experiences and journeys that shape people’s lives	Leisure, travel, life stories, rites of passage, customs and traditions, migration
Human ingenuity	The effects of human creativity and innovation	Entertainment, artistic expression, communication and media, technology, scientific innovation
Social organization	How people organize themselves through systems and shared interests	Social relationships, community, education, work, social engagement, law and order
Sharing the planet	Challenges and opportunities facing individuals and communities	Environment, human rights, peace and conflict, equality, globalization, ethics, urban and rural environments

The official Language B subject brief labels the third column optional recommended topics. That wording means the list supports course planning but does not impose a fixed sequence or require teachers to cover every item.

Teachers may also use topics that do not appear on the recommended list. For example, artificial intelligence can be studied under human ingenuity, while food insecurity could connect sharing the planet with social organization. The important requirement is that the material provides an appropriate context for developing language, intercultural understanding and communication.

Why Language B is different from language ab initio

The clearest way to understand this flexibility is to compare Language B with language ab initio. Both courses use the same five prescribed themes, but they do not treat the topics beneath those themes in the same way.

Feature	IB Language B	Language ab initio
Intended learner	Student with previous experience of the language	Beginning learner with little or no previous experience
Levels available	SL and HL	SL only
Prescribed themes	Five	Five
Topics under each theme	Optional and recommended	Four prescribed topics per theme
Total prescribed topics	No fixed total	20 prescribed topics
Teacher discretion	Broad choice of suitable topics and texts	Choice of examples and teaching methods within required topics

The official language ab initio subject brief states that four topics are prescribed for each theme, producing 20 topics that must be addressed during the course. Beginning learners need this more structured environment so that they acquire a sufficiently broad foundation of everyday vocabulary and communicative situations.

Language B students already have experience in the target language. Teachers can therefore select more demanding, culturally relevant or current material without being confined to a universal list of basic topics.

What teacher discretion means in practice

Teacher choice does not mean that a Language B course can ignore a prescribed theme. It means that the teacher chooses the route through each theme.

A teacher may base those choices on:

the cultures and communities associated with the target language
the interests and language levels of the class
access to authentic written, audio, visual and audiovisual texts
opportunities for intercultural comparison
connections among two or more themes
preparation for productive, receptive and interactive assessment

A unit on social media, for example, could address human ingenuity through technology and communication. It could simultaneously explore identities through online self-presentation and social organization through digital communities.

This overlap is valuable because real texts rarely belong to only one category. Strong Language B students learn to discuss a subject from several thematic perspectives rather than treating each theme as an isolated vocabulary chapter.

How optional topics affect the examinations

Optional does not mean irrelevant. Examination material is based on the five prescribed themes, and an unfamiliar text or prompt may use a topic your class did not study directly.

However, the examination is assessing your ability to understand and communicate in the target language, not your recall of a fixed body of specialist facts. You should be able to transfer vocabulary, text-handling skills and arguments from familiar contexts to unfamiliar ones.

Paper 1: productive skills

Paper 1 requires one written response selected from a choice of tasks. The prompts are connected to the course themes, but students must also make an appropriate decision about audience, context, purpose and text type.

A prompt about reducing food waste might not match the exact environmental units taught in class. Nevertheless, vocabulary for consumption, responsibility, community action and persuasion can be transferred to it. The RevisionDojo guide to the IB Language B paper format explains how writing, receptive skills and the oral fit together.

Paper 2: receptive skills

Paper 2 assesses listening and reading through texts connected to the prescribed themes. The texts may concern specific contexts that students have never encountered before.

Successful preparation therefore combines broad thematic vocabulary with inference, recognition of tone, contextual deduction and close reading. Trying to predict a short list of exact topics is less reliable than practising with varied material, as emphasized in the IB Language B exam strategy guide.

Individual oral assessment

At SL, the initial stimulus is a visual image connected to one or more prescribed themes. At HL, the initial stimulus is an extract from one of the two literary works studied during the course, followed by discussion that connects with the course themes.

In both cases, students need to move beyond prepared topic speeches. They must respond naturally, develop ideas and handle follow-up questions, including questions that broaden the discussion beyond the starting stimulus.

How students should revise optional topics

Do not attempt to memorize every recommended topic equally. Instead, build a flexible language system around all five prescribed themes.

For each theme, prepare:

core vocabulary, including nouns, verbs, adjectives and useful collocations
two or three adaptable examples from target-language cultures
language for explaining causes, effects, comparisons and solutions
arguments that can be adjusted to different prompts
practice with several written, audio and visual text types
possible links to at least one other theme

For identities, for example, you might prepare language relating to cultural identity, health and online self-expression. These areas allow you to respond to questions about values, lifestyle, media, community and generational differences without learning a separate script for every possibility.

Common misunderstandings to avoid

Treating the recommended list as a compulsory checklist

You are not required to prove that your class studied every recommended topic. The compulsory framework consists of the five themes, not every item printed beneath them.

Revising only the topics taught in class

Your class topics provide the foundation, but examination texts may use unfamiliar contexts. Practise applying familiar vocabulary and structures to new material rather than expecting exact repetition.

Memorizing complete answers

A memorized response may fail to address the actual audience, purpose or question. Learn adaptable phrases, examples and argument structures instead, following the practical methods in RevisionDojo’s Language B revision tips.

Assuming optional means unimportant

Recommended topics are useful because they represent productive ways to explore each theme. Their optional status gives teachers flexibility; it does not make thematic vocabulary or cultural understanding unnecessary.

Conclusion

In IB Language B, the five themes are prescribed, while the topics listed beneath them are optional recommendations. Teachers decide which topics, texts and cultural examples provide the most effective route through the compulsory thematic framework.

For exam preparation, cover every theme but prioritize transferable vocabulary, intercultural examples, text-type awareness and the ability to discuss unfamiliar contexts.
