Digital media includes digital content created, stored, processed, or distributed through digital systems. In IB Digital Society, this ranges from blogs and podcasts to video games, social media posts, immersive media, deepfakes, and AI-generated text, images, audio, or video. This content is shared by SL and HL students.
The key idea is not simply that media appears on a screen. Digital media is defined by the convergence of computing, communication, and content. A blog combines written content with computer-based production and internet distribution; a podcast combines recorded audio with digital editing, storage, and platform-based distribution.
| Type | Why it counts as digital media |
|---|---|
| Blogs and e-books | Text is digitally created, stored, edited, and distributed. |
| Podcasts and streamed music | Audio is encoded as digital data and delivered through platforms or networks. |
| Online video and livestreams | Digital video combines content, computing, and networked communication. |
| Video games | Computing produces interactive media in response to user input. |
| Social media posts | Users create and rapidly share text, images, audio, and video. |
| Virtual and augmented reality | Immersive digital media creates virtual or hybrid experiences. |
| AI-generated content | Artificial intelligence systems generate synthetic media by processing patterns learned from training data. |
A common misconception is that AI-generated content falls outside digital media because a human did not directly create every element. It still counts because the output is digital content produced and distributed through digital systems. However, its production raises digital media dilemmas, including authenticity, copyright, ownership, misinformation, bias, and responsibility.
In an IB exam, connect the media type to its defining characteristics rather than merely listing examples. For an explain question, identify the form and show how computing, communication, and content converge. For an evaluate or discuss question, consider competing impacts and implications for creators, audiences, platforms, and people represented in the content, while avoiding the assumption that newer media are automatically beneficial.
