A mainframe is designed for extremely large, reliable, multi-user processing; a server provides resources or services to other computers; and a personal computer (PC) is primarily designed for one person’s general-purpose use. The key difference is not simply physical size. A mainframe handles centralized, mission-critical workloads involving many transactions and users. It commonly uses redundant components so that one failure does not interrupt the entire service.
A server is defined mainly by its role in a network: it responds to requests from client devices. It may be a dedicated machine, a virtual machine in a cloud data centre, or a PC configured to provide a service.
A PC is defined mainly by its intended user and purpose. It gives one person direct access to general applications, although it can support multiple accounts and network services.
A common misconception is that every server is a mainframe. This is incorrect: many servers use ordinary hardware, while mainframes are specialized systems that can provide several server functions.
Exam technique: For an explain question, identify each type and give reasons for the distinction. Compare intended users, network role, workload, reliability and typical use, rather than relying only on size.
