Inclusive design addresses physical, sensory, and cognitive impairments by identifying barriers experienced by diverse users and incorporating accessible features into a product, service, or environment from the beginning of the design process. Its aim is to enable the widest practical range of people to use the outcome independently, safely, and effectively.
In C1.2 Inclusive design, designers recognize that users have different capabilities, needs, and contexts. They conduct user research, translate findings into design specifications, develop accessible solutions, and test prototypes with representative users. This is preferable to treating accessibility as a modification added after a design has been completed.
| Type of impairment | Inclusive design responses |
|---|---|
| Physical impairment | Reduce required strength, reach, precision, or mobility. Examples include adjustable dimensions, ramp access, large controls, low operating force, non-slip grips, and alternatives to complex gestures. |
| Sensory impairment | Communicate information through more than one sensory channel. Examples include captions with audio, tactile markings, high visual contrast, adjustable volume, vibration alerts, and compatibility with screen readers. |
| Cognitive impairment | Reduce memory demands, confusion, and information overload. Examples include consistent layouts, plain language, recognizable symbols, clear feedback, step-by-step instructions, and error prevention or recovery. |
A key mechanism is multimodal communication: important information is presented in more than one form. For example, an alarm that uses sound, flashing light, and vibration does not depend on hearing alone. Similarly, a door that opens automatically removes the need for grip strength while also helping users carrying objects.
A common misconception is that inclusive design creates a separate product for each impairment. Instead, it seeks flexible solutions that accommodate user diversity within one design, while recognizing that no single outcome can satisfy every possible user need.
