Media circulates through digital society when digital systems create, copy, distribute, recommend, and receive content across networked physical and virtual spaces. This is part of the shared SL and HL syllabus, connecting space (2.5) with media.
Digital media may move directly between people, through platforms, or across several channels at once. Because it can be copied without removing the original, one item can circulate rapidly among many people and communities. Its movement depends on internet infrastructure, platform algorithms, user sharing, and access to devices.

The concept of space focuses on access, movement, and flows. Media circulation therefore involves more than geographical movement: content flows through virtual spaces, crosses national borders, and may connect local communities with global audiences. However, circulation is uneven because access to infrastructure, language, platform visibility, and digital literacy differs between people and communities.
A common misconception is that media spreads freely or randomly. In reality, circulation is shaped by platform design, commercial objectives, moderation policies, user behaviour, and unequal power over digital spaces.
In an IB response, explain both the technical pathway and its social significance. For an explain question, identify a mechanism and give reasons for its effect. For a discuss question, balance opportunities such as wider expression against dilemmas such as misinformation, unequal visibility, or platform control.
