Historical patterns help us forecast by revealing recurring drivers, constraints and consequences of digital change. They do not predict the future with certainty, but they support evidence-based judgments about which developments may represent continuity and which may create discontinuity.
This is shared SL and HL content within Change (2.1). A useful forecast begins by identifying a historical pattern, explaining its causes, and then assessing whether similar conditions exist today.
| Historical pattern | Possible forecasting use |
|---|---|
| Digital systems become cheaper and more accessible over time | Adoption may spread to new people and communities, although uneven access can remain. |
| New platforms create supporting ecosystems | A successful system may generate new applications, services and forms of employment. |
| Regulation follows harmful or disruptive impacts | Emerging systems may face stronger laws, professional codes or platform rules. |
| Innovations produce unintended consequences | Forecasts should include risks as well as intended benefits. |
System: ChatGPT is a generative artificial intelligence system that processes prompts and generates content from patterns in training data.
Example specifics: OpenAI released ChatGPT publicly in November 2022, so this example postdates the 2022 coursebook. Microsoft subsequently integrated related generative AI systems into its Copilot products. This resembles the earlier development of smartphones, where one device became a platform for a wider ecosystem of applications and services.
Impacts and implications: Generative AI has already affected education, employment and content creation. Looking forward, the platform pattern suggests further integration into everyday software, while historical concerns about the digital divide, misinformation and regulation suggest uneven benefits and new risks.
Concepts: Systems thinking shows that developments depend on interacting users, companies, data, infrastructure and governments. Historical comparison also helps determine whether generative AI is an evolution of existing automation or a more fundamental transformation.
In an IB response, avoid the misconception that a trend guarantees a particular future. Explain the pattern, apply it to a specific real-world example, consider both continuity and discontinuity, and distinguish observed impacts from future implications.
