Digital tools preserve cultural heritage, customs and celebrations by recording, storing and sharing them, but they can also change how traditions are performed, interpreted and controlled. This is shared SL and HL content in the cultural context, particularly area for inquiry 4.1C.
Digitization converts analogue heritage, such as manuscripts, photographs and recorded performances, into digital data. Digital archives, 3D scans and virtual exhibitions can protect knowledge from physical deterioration and provide access across geographical boundaries. Networked media can also enable diaspora communities to participate remotely.
Digitalization goes further by using digital systems to change how an organization or community operates. Livestreaming a ceremony may expand participation, but camera placement, platform rules and audience expectations can alter its performance. This illustrates change through both continuity with tradition and discontinuity from earlier practices.

A specific real-world example is CyArk's documentation of Bagan, Myanmar. System: CyArk uses laser scanning and photogrammetry to create digital records of heritage sites. Example specifics: After the 2016 earthquake, CyArk worked with local partners to document damaged temples. Impacts and implications: The records supported conservation and wider access, but digital reproduction creates risks concerning who controls, interprets and benefits from cultural data. This demonstrates systems, because preservation connects communities, institutions and technologies, and power, because control of archives is unequal.
In an IB response, distinguish preservation from unchanged survival. For an explain question, show mechanisms; for a discuss question, balance access and continuity against altered meaning, unequal representation and control. Correct the misconception that digitization automatically preserves culture exactly as it was.
