Digital expression is expression created, represented, modified, or distributed through digital systems. Expression in general is the broader act of representing ideas, emotions, or experiences through any mode or medium, whether digital or non-digital.
This distinction applies to both SL and HL. In IB Digital Society, expression is a course concept, not merely a content format. Syllabus point 2.2A defines it as the act, process, or instance of representing ideas, emotions, or experiences using different modes and media.
Digital expression is therefore a subset of expression. It can include a video uploaded to a platform, a digitally edited photograph, a podcast, a meme, or an avatar. Non-digital expression can include an unrecorded speech, a printed painting, handwriting, or a live performance without digital mediation.

Digital systems do more than provide a new channel. They can reshape who has the power to express ideas, who encounters them, and how platforms rank or restrict them. This links to syllabus points 2.2B and 2.2C: expression supports functions such as storytelling and political activism, while also bringing people together and creating significant dilemmas.
A common misconception is that all modern expression is digital. The correct distinction depends on whether a digital system creates, processes, stores, or distributes the expression.
In an exam, define expression first, then explain how digital systems alter its creation, circulation, participation, and control. For an explain question, give reasons; for a discuss question, balance opportunities against dilemmas for different people and communities.
