Cradle-to-grave means assessing a product’s environmental impacts across its entire life cycle, from raw material extraction (the “cradle”) to its final disposal (the “grave”). It defines a complete system boundary rather than examining only manufacturing or use.
In life-cycle analysis (LCA), the designer traces the material and energy flows associated with each stage. This helps identify where resources are consumed and where emissions, waste, or other environmental impacts occur.
| Life-cycle stage | What is assessed |
|---|---|
| Raw material extraction | Acquisition and processing of natural resources, including energy use and ecosystem impacts |
| Material processing and manufacturing | Energy, water, auxiliary materials, emissions, and production waste |
| Packaging and distribution | Packaging materials, transport distances, transport methods, and fuel use |
| Product use | Energy, water, consumables, maintenance, repair, and the product’s expected lifetime |
| End of life | Collection, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, incineration, or landfill disposal |
For example, a cradle-to-grave analysis of an electric kettle would not consider only the electricity used during boiling. It would also include metal and polymer extraction, component manufacture, assembly, packaging, transport, maintenance, use over the kettle’s lifetime, and its eventual recycling or disposal.
A common misconception is that cradle-to-grave automatically describes a circular system. It does not. The term includes the end-of-life stage, but the product may still finish in landfill or incineration. A cradle-to-cradle approach differs because materials are intentionally recovered and returned to biological or technical cycles rather than becoming waste.
For IB Design Technology HL subtopic C3.2 Life-cycle analysis, an examiner may ask you to identify the system boundary, explain stages, or evaluate environmental impacts. State both endpoints clearly, apply the stages to the named product, and avoid discussing manufacturing alone when the question specifies cradle-to-grave.
