A computer consists of hardware that performs physical operations, software that provides instructions, and interfaces that enable interaction between users, software and hardware. This topic is shared by SL and HL students under IB Digital Society 3.3 Computers.
Hardware means the physical components of a computer. These include the processor, which executes instructions; memory such as RAM, which temporarily holds active data and instructions; storage devices, which retain data; and input and output devices, such as keyboards, cameras, screens and speakers.
Software is the set of digital instructions executed by hardware. System software, including an operating system, manages hardware resources and provides a platform for other programs. Application software performs tasks for users, such as word processing, communication or media editing.
An interface is the point of interaction between parts of a computer system. A user interface allows a person to control software through elements such as icons, menus, touch gestures or voice commands. Interfaces can also connect hardware components or allow software systems to exchange data.
| Component | Role | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Physically processes, stores, receives or outputs data | Processor, RAM, storage drive, keyboard |
| Software | Supplies the instructions that hardware executes | Operating system, browser, editing application |
| Interface | Enables interaction or communication within the system | Touchscreen, graphical user interface, device port |
The key relationship is interdependence: software requires hardware to run, while hardware requires software instructions to perform useful tasks. An interface is not always a completely separate category because it may be physical, such as a touchscreen, or software-based, such as an on-screen menu.
Exam technique: For an explain question, give the distinction and show the relationship between the components. Avoid the misconception that an interface only means a screen: it is any point through which a user or system component interacts with another part of the digital system.
