For both SL and HL, change means a shift from one form, state, or value to another. It can be understood as evolution, transformation, adaptation, or movement, depending on the scale, speed, and nature of that shift.
In IB Digital Society, syllabus point 2.1A defines change through these four forms. Syllabus point 2.1D then asks whether change shows continuity or discontinuity with established ways of understanding or doing things.

These categories can overlap. For example, digital learning may evolve through gradual improvements, require schools to adapt their practices, and eventually transform relationships between teachers, students, and knowledge. The classification therefore depends on the time frame, stakeholders, and evidence being considered.
A common misconception is that every new digital system is automatically transformative. Novelty alone does not prove transformation. Students must explain whether the system preserves established structures or produces a genuine discontinuity.
In an exam response, define the relevant form of change, apply it to a specific digital system, and justify the classification through its impacts on people and communities. For an AO3 command term such as discuss, consider both continuity and discontinuity before reaching a supported conclusion.
