Designers balance the three Ps by making decisions that are socially responsible (people), environmentally sustainable (planet), and economically viable (profit). The aim is not necessarily to give each factor equal weight, but to reach the most sustainable compromise across the product’s life cycle.
The triple bottom line expands the evaluation of design success beyond financial profit. Designers establish criteria for each P, collect evidence, identify conflicts, and justify trade-offs based on the design context and stakeholder priorities.
| P | What designers consider | Possible design response |
|---|---|---|
| People | User safety, accessibility, working conditions, cultural values, and effects on communities | Apply inclusive design principles, use ethical suppliers, and ensure safe manufacturing and use |
| Planet | Resource depletion, energy use, pollution, waste, emissions, and biodiversity | Select renewable or recycled materials, reduce material use, and design for repair, disassembly, or recycling |
| Profit | Production costs, market demand, pricing, investment, and long-term business viability | Simplify manufacture, reduce waste, increase durability, and create value for customers |
Designers can use life-cycle analysis to evaluate environmental impacts during raw-material extraction, manufacture, distribution, use, and disposal. They also consult stakeholders, such as users, manufacturers, workers, local communities, and investors, because each group may prioritize different outcomes.
For example, replacing virgin plastic with recycled plastic may reduce environmental impact but increase sourcing or processing costs. A designer could balance the three Ps by redesigning the product to use less material, securing a reliable recycled-material supplier, and confirming that the final product remains safe, affordable, and profitable.
A common misconception is that sustainability means protecting only the environment. In Design Technology, sustainable design includes social and economic consequences as well as environmental ones.
