Is IB Language B suitable for a complete beginner?

IB Language B is generally intended for students with some previous experience of the target language. Complete beginners are more likely to be suited to language ab initio, where that language is offered. However, the IB does not establish one universal placement test or a simple number-of-years rule for every school. Your school should consider your educational background, proficiency, and experience using the language. Discuss placement with the language teacher or DP coordinator before choosing between the courses.

Do you need to be fluent before starting IB Language B?

You do not need to be fluent before beginning IB Language B. The course is designed to extend an existing foundation through increasingly complex reading, listening, writing, and speaking. You should nevertheless be able to engage with prior learning and communicate at a level beyond a complete beginner. Expectations depend on whether you take SL or HL, with HL requiring greater range and complexity. Consistent exposure and active practice during the course matter more than sounding perfect at the start.

What grammar do you learn in IB Language B?

The IB does not prescribe one universal grammar checklist for every Language B because grammatical systems differ between languages. Teachers select structures needed to communicate accurately across the prescribed themes, text types, and assessment tasks. Students commonly develop control of tense, agreement, sentence formation, comparison, modality, cohesion, and ways of expressing opinions or hypotheses where relevant to the language. Grammar is assessed through effective communication rather than as a separate examination paper. You should therefore practise structures in meaningful spoken and written contexts, not only through isolated exercises.

Is literature compulsory in IB Language B?

Literature is compulsory at Higher Level, where students study two works originally written in the target language. An extract from one of these works provides the stimulus for the HL individual oral. Literature is not a prescribed SL requirement under the current course structure, although teachers may still use literary texts where appropriate. HL students should understand the extract’s events, ideas, messages, and connection to the wider work. The purpose remains language development and communication, so Language B literary study should not be confused with a Language A literature course.

What is the difference between IB Language B and Language A?

Language B is a language acquisition course for students developing proficiency in an additional language. Language A is a studies in language and literature course intended for students with a high level of academic competence in that language. Language B primarily assesses communication through reading, listening, writing, and speaking across prescribed themes. Language A places substantially greater emphasis on literary and non-literary analysis, interpretation, and critical argument. A student may speak a language confidently yet still need guidance from the school when deciding which course best matches their academic literacy.

How should I revise for an IB Language B exam?

Revise each assessed skill through regular, targeted practice rather than relying on vocabulary memorization alone. Organize vocabulary and cultural examples around the five prescribed themes, then use them in writing and speaking. Complete timed Paper 1 tasks, short listening exercises, and reading passages while keeping an error log of recurring problems. For the oral, record spontaneous responses and practise supporting each opinion with a reason, example, and thematic connection. Use official specimen materials alongside RevisionDojo Questionbank practice, Flashcards, Mock Exams, and feedback from your teacher or tutor.

What Do You Learn in IB Language B?

• 23 Jul 2026•13

IB Language B teaches you to communicate effectively in a language in which you already have some experience. You develop vocabulary and grammar, but the course goes further: you learn to understand authentic texts, adapt language to different audiences, discuss cultural and global issues, and communicate through speaking and writing in familiar and unfamiliar contexts.

The course is offered at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). Both levels study five prescribed themes and develop receptive, productive, and interactive skills, while HL requires greater linguistic complexity and the study of two literary works originally written in the target language.

What is IB Language B?

IB Language B is a language acquisition subject in Group 2 of the Diploma Programme. It is intended for students who have previously studied or used the target language, unlike language ab initio, which is designed for beginners.

The IB recommends 150 teaching hours at SL and 240 teaching hours at HL. Placement should reflect your existing proficiency rather than simply the number of years you have studied the language, so schools normally consider prior experience and current ability.

The central aim is successful communication. According to the official IB Language B course description, students learn through language, themes, and texts while developing an understanding of how language works in different contexts.

The three kinds of language knowledge you develop

IB Language B develops three closely connected areas of competence.

Area	What it means	Example
Linguistic skills	Knowledge of vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, spelling, and sentence structure	Using an appropriate past tense to narrate an experience clearly
Sociolinguistic skills	Choosing language that suits the audience, relationship, culture, and context	Using a formal register in a letter to a local authority
Pragmatic skills	Organizing and connecting ideas so that a message achieves its purpose	Structuring a speech to explain a problem and persuade listeners to act

These distinctions matter because accurate grammar alone does not guarantee effective communication. A grammatically correct message can still be unsuitable if its tone is too informal, its ideas are disorganized, or it ignores the intended audience.

Across the course, you learn to describe situations, narrate events, make comparisons, explain problems, and state and support opinions. You apply these functions to both familiar subjects and less predictable issues, gradually communicating with more detail, nuance, and independence.

The five prescribed IB Language B themes

All IB Language B courses are organized around five prescribed themes. The themes are compulsory, but the individual topics and guiding questions suggested by the IB are recommendations rather than a fixed list that every teacher must teach identically.

Prescribed theme	Main focus	Possible areas of study
Identities	The nature of the self and what it means to be human	Health, lifestyles, beliefs, subcultures, language and identity
Experiences	Events and journeys that shape people’s lives	Travel, leisure, traditions, rites of passage, migration, life stories
Human ingenuity	The effects of creativity and innovation	Technology, media, entertainment, art, scientific innovation
Social organization	How people organize themselves through systems and shared interests	Education, work, community, relationships, law and social engagement
Sharing the planet	Challenges and opportunities faced by communities	Environment, equality, human rights, globalization, ethics, peace and conflict

These themes provide contexts for language learning rather than bodies of factual knowledge to memorize. For example, studying climate change is useful because it helps you interpret arguments, explain causes and consequences, compare perspectives, and propose solutions in the target language. Paper 2 assesses your comprehension of the texts presented, not your recall of specialist facts about a particular topic.

The themes also develop intercultural understanding. You may compare attitudes toward education, family, technology, or environmental responsibility across communities where the target language is used, while avoiding the assumption that one country represents an entire language or culture.

The communication skills you practise

Receptive skills

Receptive skills involve understanding written, audio, visual, and audiovisual texts. You learn to identify main ideas, retrieve details, recognize opinions and attitudes, follow arguments, infer meaning from context, and notice how a text’s structure affects its message.

Listening practice may include interviews, announcements, discussions, reports, or speeches featuring different voices and speaking styles. Reading may involve articles, blogs, correspondence, advertisements, reports, or other authentic and adapted texts.

Productive skills

Productive skills involve creating spoken and written messages. You learn to develop relevant ideas, organize them logically, use increasingly accurate and varied language, and select conventions appropriate to the chosen text type.

A response to a public issue, for example, could require a formal proposal rather than a personal diary entry. The content may overlap, but the register, structure, opening, closing, and relationship with the reader should change.

Interactive skills

Interactive skills concern sustaining communication with another person. You practise responding to questions, expanding answers, asking for clarification, reacting to another viewpoint, and repairing communication when you make a mistake or cannot recall a word.

This is why oral preparation should not consist only of memorizing a presentation. Successful interaction requires attentive listening and the ability to develop an unrehearsed response.

Texts, audience, purpose, and culture

Students engage with texts of varying complexity and nuance. Instead of treating every text as a vocabulary exercise, you consider five conceptual understandings: audience, context, purpose, meaning, and variation.

Ask the following questions whenever you read or create a text:

Who is communicating, and to whom?
What is the situation or cultural context?
Is the purpose to inform, narrate, persuade, evaluate, or entertain?
What explicit and implied meanings are present?
How does language vary according to region, community, medium, or formality?

This approach is particularly important in Paper 1. Strong writing must answer the prompt while sounding like the requested text for the specified reader. RevisionDojo’s Language B paper format guide explains how these decisions connect to assessment.

What is different at SL and HL?

SL and HL share the same themes and broad assessment structure, but HL is not simply SL with more vocabulary.

Feature	SL	HL
Recommended teaching time	150 hours	240 hours
Expected language	Clear and effective communication with appropriate range	Greater range, complexity, precision, and nuance
Literary study	Not prescribed	Two literary works originally written in the target language
Oral stimulus	Visual stimulus linked to a prescribed theme	Extract from one of the literary works studied
Tasks and texts	Appropriate SL complexity	More demanding language and higher-order thinking

HL literary study develops language through close engagement with characters, ideas, cultural contexts, and authorial choices. Language B remains a language acquisition course, however, so the literary component should not be confused with the broader literary analysis required in Language A.

How your learning is assessed

The assessment structure is the same in weighting at SL and HL, although the difficulty and expectations differ.

Component	Skills assessed	Weighting
Paper 1	Productive skills through one written response selected from three tasks	25%
Paper 2 listening	Understanding three audio passages	25%
Paper 2 reading	Understanding three written passages	25%
Individual oral	Productive and interactive speaking skills	25%

At SL, the individual oral begins with a presentation and discussion based on a visual stimulus connected to a prescribed theme, followed by a broader conversation drawing on at least one additional theme. At HL, the presentation and initial discussion concern an extract from one of the two literary works, followed by a general thematic conversation.

Students can examine the IB’s official Language B specimen papers to see how receptive and productive skills appear in an examination setting.

How to turn course learning into exam preparation

Effective revision should reproduce the skills being assessed rather than rely on passive rereading.

Build vocabulary in thematic clusters, including verbs, collocations, connectors, and evaluative language.
Practise grammar through messages, paragraphs, and spoken responses rather than isolated rules alone.
Learn text-type conventions alongside audience, context, and purpose.
Complete short listening activities frequently and review why each incorrect answer was tempting.
Record oral responses and check whether you support opinions with reasons and examples.
Complete timed writing and comprehension tasks well before the final examination period.

A practical cycle is to review language with Flashcards, apply it through a Questionbank task, and record recurring mistakes in an error log. RevisionDojo’s IB English B resources provide examples of this workflow, while its Language B oral preparation guide focuses on spontaneous speaking. Jojo AI can help generate follow-up questions or explain corrections, but responses should still be checked against your teacher’s guidance and official criteria.

Common misunderstandings to avoid

A frequent mistake is treating the themes as lists of facts. They are contexts through which you demonstrate language and communication skills, so memorized statistics cannot replace comprehension or a well-developed argument.

Students also overestimate the value of rare vocabulary. Precise, appropriate language that you can control is usually more effective than complicated expressions used inaccurately. Similarly, memorizing an entire oral response can make interaction less flexible when the teacher asks an unexpected question.

Finally, do not revise reading, listening, writing, and speaking in the same way. Each requires a distinct method: comprehension needs evidence-based interpretation, writing needs deliberate choices about audience and purpose, and speaking needs repeated spontaneous interaction.

Conclusion

IB Language B develops far more than vocabulary and grammar. You learn to interpret varied texts, communicate ideas clearly, adapt language to different social and cultural contexts, and discuss personal and global issues through five prescribed themes.

SL and HL share this foundation, while HL requires greater complexity and two literary works. For exam preparation, combine regular exposure to the language with timed production, comprehension practice, and specific feedback. RevisionDojo Study Notes, Flashcards, Questionbank practice, Mock Exams, and Jojo AI can support that cycle when used alongside official IB materials and classroom instruction.
