For applications submitted in fall 2026, usually for 2027 entry, universities treat IB Music differently depending on the degree. Music departments may consider your predicted grade, analytical writing, performance recordings, compositions, audition and interview. Conservatoires usually place greater emphasis on demonstrated musical ability, while non-music degrees normally treat IB Music as part of your academic record.

Universities do not automatically receive your complete IB Music coursework. They usually see your transcript and predicted grades first, then receive recordings, compositions or written work only when the application specifically requests or permits them.

How universities use your IB Music grade

Your predicted IB Music grade contributes to your predicted Diploma total. Where Music is a prerequisite, you may also need a particular Higher Level result.

For example, the University of Manchester's 2027 MusB requirements specify 35 points overall, with 665 at Higher Level including 6 in Music. Cambridge lists a typical offer of 40-42 points with 776 at Higher Level and normally expects Music at HL or an accepted theory qualification. Requirements vary, so taking Music HL does not automatically satisfy every course.

Universities may use your grade:

  • As part of your total IB score
  • As a subject prerequisite for an academic music course
  • As evidence of sustained analytical, creative and practical work

A predicted 6 or 7 remains separate from an audition or portfolio. An excellent audition may not compensate for missing a stated academic minimum unless the institution allows flexibility.

What IB Music coursework demonstrates

The current course is portfolio-based. According to the official IB Music subject page, students undertake exploring, experimenting and presenting music, while HL students also complete The contemporary music-maker project.

IB Music componentEvidence it can provide
Exploring music in contextAnalysis, research, musical literacy and contextual awareness
Experimenting with musicCuriosity, reflection, risk-taking and revision
Presenting musicFinished performances or compositions and artistic judgment
The contemporary music-maker, HL onlyCollaboration, project management and evaluation

At SL, Exploring, Experimenting and Presenting are weighted 30%, 30% and 40%. At HL, they are weighted 20%, 20% and 30%, with the contemporary music-maker worth 30%. These are IB assessment weightings, not university admissions weightings.

Admissions staff may not inspect every component. However, your coursework can produce a polished recording, original score, analytical extract or interview example. The RevisionDojo IB Music portfolio guide explains how to identify genuinely presentable evidence.

What different university pathways prioritize

Academic music degrees

University music courses often combine history, analysis, composition, performance and academic study. They may care strongly about grades, theoretical understanding and written work rather than assessing applicants only as performers.

For 2027 entry, Oxford asks applicants for teacher-marked essays, harmony or counterpoint work and a performance video of up to five minutes. Original compositions are optional. Cambridge normally requests one or two essays with technical exercises and/or compositions, followed by an interview involving musical discussion and a score.

Strong evidence might include a precise analytical passage, marked work showing your response to feedback, or a composition demonstrating structural control. You should also be able to explain the musical reasoning behind your decisions.

Conservatoires and performance-focused programmes

At conservatoires, the audition or composition portfolio is often central. The Royal College of Music BMus page states that offers are based on audition performance, or portfolio and interview for composers, alongside academic minimums.

Performers need secure technique, stylistic understanding and suitable repertoire. Composers need convincing ideas, control of their chosen medium and the ability to discuss their work. Your IB submission is not automatically a suitable admissions portfolio because requirements for duration, repertoire, scores and recording format may differ.

Specialist deadlines can also arrive early. The Royal College of Music set 1 October 2026 as the application and composition portfolio deadline for many 2027-entry applicants.

Non-music degrees

For history, engineering, medicine or another non-music subject, IB Music normally contributes to your overall academic profile. It can demonstrate disciplined practice, independent creation, cultural analysis and project management, but it does not replace course-specific prerequisites.

Use concrete evidence rather than claiming music automatically proves leadership or intelligence. Leading an ensemble may demonstrate collaboration, while revising a composition can show how you respond to criticism.

Some US universities accept an optional arts portfolio from non-music majors. Stanford presents this as an opportunity for students with exceptional artistic ability, not a routine attachment. A clear Activities entry may be more effective than a weak supplement.

Should you submit IB coursework?

Submit IB work when it matches the university's instructions and represents your best recent ability. A high IB mark alone does not prove that an item suits the admissions brief.

Check six points before uploading:

  1. Relevance: Does it answer the requested task or medium?
  2. Quality: Is it among your strongest current work?
  3. Ownership: Are collaborators and your contribution identified?
  4. Format: Does it follow file, duration and recording rules?
  5. Recency: Does it meet any stated time limit?
  6. Coherence: Can you explain its purpose, process and outcome?

The University of Virginia requires optional music recordings to be live and unedited, while Lafayette requests up to three contrasting selections and prefers recent recordings. This illustrates why one IB recording cannot be submitted unchanged everywhere.

For compositions, retain readable scores, audio exports and concise contextual notes. RevisionDojo's IB Music composition guide explains how to document development without letting process material overwhelm the finished work.

Preparing for interviews and fall 2026 deadlines

Admissions tutors want more than a repertoire list. Explain the musical problem, the decision you made, the evidence behind it and how the result changed. Specific reflection demonstrates aural judgment and intellectual independence.

Deadlines for music applicants may precede general university deadlines. Record application, prescreening, portfolio, audition and reference dates separately. Check whether Music HL is required, test every file and link, and prepare to discuss each submitted item without a script.

Ask your teacher what evidence supports your predicted grade, then select work for each institution rather than creating one universal portfolio. The RevisionDojo guides to IB Music portfolio structure, predicted grades and early admissions, and IB Music coursework examples can support that review.

Conclusion

Academic music degrees may emphasize predicted grades, writing and intellectual discussion. Conservatoires prioritize auditions or composition portfolios alongside academic minimums, while non-music courses usually consider Music within the broader transcript.

Your coursework matters when it becomes clear evidence of musicianship, reflection and improvement. Follow each institution's current instructions and submit only material suited to its purpose. RevisionDojo's coursework examples, Jojo AI and Tutors can help you evaluate and refine that evidence.
