With limited time, IB Maths AA last-minute revision should focus on three priorities: recent exam-style questions, your weakest high-frequency methods, and careful review of how marks are earned. Do not try to complete the largest possible number of papers. A smaller set of questions, reviewed until you can reproduce each method independently, is usually more useful.
Begin with the newest papers available through your school because they best reflect the current course and assessment style. Use older questions for additional practice, but do not treat past-paper patterns as predictions. The IB states that knowledge of all syllabus topics is required, even though every topic may not appear in every examination session.
Know the examination you are preparing for
The current Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches course has five compulsory topics: number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus. According to the official IB Mathematics AA subject brief, the written examinations contribute 80% of the final subject result, with the mathematical exploration contributing 20%.

Papers 1 and 2 contain compulsory short-response and extended-response questions. HL Paper 3 contains two compulsory extended-response problem-solving questions. The official Mathematics AA guide also confirms that marks may be awarded for method, accuracy, reasoning and interpretation, so unsupported answers may not receive full credit.
What to prioritise in last-minute revision
1. Diagnose weaknesses before revising
Spend 20 to 30 minutes sampling questions from all five topics. Use recent marked work, a short mixed test, or the RevisionDojo Maths AA Questionbank. Classify each result rather than simply recording whether it was correct.
Use four categories:
Secure: correct method, accurate working and reasonable speed
Slow: correct, but too time-consuming
Method gap: you could not identify the required approach
Execution error: you knew the method but made an algebraic, calculator or notation mistake
Prioritise method gaps first, especially where the same skill supports several topics. Algebraic manipulation, equation solving, function notation, graph interpretation and differentiation often reappear inside longer questions. Fixing one of these foundational weaknesses can therefore recover marks across multiple sections of a paper.
2. Use recent papers selectively
Start with the newest official papers your school is licensed to provide, then move backwards if time remains. Recent papers are valuable because their wording and balance are closest to the course first assessed in 2021. The IB also publishes official Mathematics AA specimen papers, which are useful for checking paper structure and expected response styles.
Do not automatically sit every paper from beginning to end. If an initial attempt shows that calculus and functions are your weakest areas, extract representative questions from those areas and study them closely. 3. Review methods, not just answers
For every missed question, identify the first line at which your reasoning failed. A final answer such as x=3 tells you very little; a method label such as “differentiate, solve f′(x)=0, then test the nature of the stationary point” can be reused.
Use this rapid review cycle:
Attempt the question without help for a limited time.
Compare your work with the markscheme or worked solution.
Identify the trigger that should have suggested the method.
Close the solution and reproduce the complete argument.
Attempt one similar question with changed values or context.

Choose topics by return on time
There is no official list of guaranteed “high-yield” topics. All five topics are compulsory, and past frequency does not guarantee future appearance. In last-minute revision, high yield means the greatest likely mark improvement for you, not the topic that appeared most often in somebody else's spreadsheet.

HL students should also identify gaps in additional HL content rather than revising only familiar SL techniques. However, difficult HL work still depends on accurate foundational algebra and functions. If you repeatedly lose early method marks through weak manipulation, repairing that weakness may be more productive than attempting another unfamiliar Paper 3 problem.
Prepare differently for each paper
Paper 1: build non-calculator fluency
Paper 1 requires exact manipulation, recognition of standard forms and clear written reasoning without calculator support. Practise rearranging expressions, solving equations, differentiating and integrating standard functions, and working with exact trigonometric values. Do not spend the final hours memorising every formula. The examination provides a clean mathematics formula booklet, but you must know what its formulas mean and when they apply. Practise locating formulas quickly and recognising common results that are not useful unless you can connect them to the question.
Paper 2: rehearse calculator decisions
Paper 2 assesses mathematics with technology, not merely calculator button sequences. Practise graphing functions, solving equations numerically, using statistical distributions and checking window settings. Always record the mathematical setup before giving a calculator result, such as the equation solved, distribution used or integral evaluated.
Check that your approved calculator is in the required examination condition and that you know its essential menus. Do not attempt a software update or learn an entirely new operating system on the night before the examination.
HL Paper 3: practise entering unfamiliar problems
Paper 3 rewards sustained problem solving. When a question looks unfamiliar, use earlier parts as guidance, define variables carefully and record intermediate conclusions. A result proved in part (a) is often intended to support a later part.
In the final revision period, practise selected Paper 3 problems rather than repeatedly sitting full papers. Focus on making progress, communicating conjectures and using technology efficiently. Even if you cannot complete the final part, coherent earlier work can earn marks.
A practical final revision schedule
If you have one day remaining, use four focused blocks:
Block 1: Complete a short mixed diagnostic and identify three weaknesses.
Block 2: Review worked solutions for those weaknesses and create one-line method summaries.
Block 3: Complete a timed Paper 1 or Paper 2 section under correct calculator conditions.
Block 4: Mark it, redo missed questions and organise examination materials.
If you have three days, use the first day for diagnosis and topic repair, the second for paper-specific practice, and the third for a short simulation followed by error correction. Avoid exhausting yourself with a full paper late at night. Accuracy, concentration and sleep are part of examination preparation.
Common mistakes that waste limited revision time

Rewriting complete notes instead of solving questions
Completing many questions without marking or reattempting them
Watching solutions passively without predicting the next step
Revising only favourite topics
Ignoring calculator technique until Paper 2
