Preparing for November mocks in Language Acquisition requires more than memorizing vocabulary. Effective IB Language Acquisition mock exam prep combines regular contact with the target language, targeted reading and listening, timed writing, and careful review of mistakes.

First, confirm which components your school will assess. A mock is an internal examination, so your teacher may use the full IB format, selected sections, adapted timings, or only material covered so far. Once you know the scope, use the four-week plan below to turn language knowledge into reliable exam performance.

Understand what your mock may assess

Diploma Programme Language Acquisition includes Language B at SL or HL and language ab initio at SL. The official courses assess productive, receptive, and interactive communication, although a written November mock often concentrates on Paper 1 and Paper 2.

According to the official IB Language B course information, external assessment includes Paper 1 writing and Paper 2 listening and reading. Language B candidates complete one writing task from three choices. The official language ab initio subject brief specifies two written tasks, each selected from three choices.

ComponentMain preparation priority
Paper 1Purpose, audience, register, text type, organization, range, and accuracy
Paper 2 listeningMain ideas, details, opinions, intention, and concise note-taking
Paper 2 readingEvidence retrieval, inference, vocabulary in context, and reference words
Individual oral, if includedInterpretation, thematic connections, fluency, and interaction

In final IB assessment, writing, listening, reading, and the individual oral each contribute 25%. Your school does not have to use those weightings for a November mock. Ask about the timetable, covered themes, permitted materials, text types, and oral component.

Organize revision by theme

Language B and language ab initio use five prescribed themes: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organization, and sharing the planet. Learn vocabulary in thematic networks instead of isolated alphabetical lists.

For each theme, collect:

  • 15-20 useful nouns and topic-specific expressions
  • 8-10 versatile verbs in relevant tenses
  • Connectors showing contrast, cause, consequence, and concession
  • Two cultural or real-world examples
  • Three opinions supported with reasons
  • Common collocations rather than single translated words

For sharing the planet, for example, do not learn only the word for pollution. Add expressions meaning to reduce emissions, to raise public awareness, despite the cost, and local authorities should introduce. Reusable combinations support writing, speaking, reading, and listening.

Use RevisionDojo's IB resource library to find subject-specific materials. Relevant options include the Spanish B Questionbank and French B Questionbank.

Follow a four-week study plan

Week 4: Diagnose and organize

Complete a short writing task, reading set, and listening set without extensive preparation. Mark them using your teacher's criteria or the supplied markscheme. Classify weaknesses as vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, text-type choice, register, timing, or carelessness.

Choose three precise priorities. Incorrect past-tense forms is actionable; improve French is not.

Week 3: Repair weak skills

Complete five focused sessions of 30-45 minutes: two for vocabulary and grammar, one for reading, one for listening, and one for writing. After receptive exercises, locate the evidence for every answer in the text or transcript.

Before writing, identify the audience, purpose, required content, register, and suitable text type. Planning these elements prevents a linguistically strong response from missing the task.

Week 2: Add timed practice

Complete at least one timed writing response plus separate timed reading and listening sections. Follow your school's conditions, and do not pause audio or consult vocabulary unless permitted.

Mark the work on the same day. RevisionDojo Test Builder and Exam Mode can support controlled practice where relevant materials are available, while the IB Questionbank helps target specific weaknesses.

Week 1: Rehearse and consolidate

Complete one realistic simulation early in the week. Use later sessions to correct recurring errors, review high-frequency vocabulary, and rewrite weak passages. During the final 24 hours, review text-type structures, connectors, tense triggers, question words, and your mistake log instead of learning large new lists.

Improve each assessed skill

Writing

Compare all tasks and select the one for which you can communicate the clearest relevant ideas. Plan an opening, two or three developed points, and a closing. Reserve time to check agreements, verb forms, spelling, register, repeated vocabulary, and every required content point.

Reading and listening

For reading, examine the title, source, and opening sentence before answering. Find textual evidence and watch for negatives, contrast words, tense changes, synonyms, and pronoun references. Questions often use paraphrases rather than words copied directly from the passage.

For listening, use preparation time to predict vocabulary and the information required. Note keywords and relationships rather than transcribing sentences. If you miss one phrase, continue listening, then use a transcript where available to determine whether the problem was vocabulary, sound recognition, distraction, or interpretation.

Speaking, if included

Record two-minute responses connected to the five themes. Move from description to interpretation and then to a personal or cultural connection. Prepare flexible opinion structures, examples, and repair phrases instead of memorizing a complete speech.

Avoid common preparation mistakes

Making notes is not enough because language improves through retrieval and use. Every vocabulary or grammar session should lead to a short speaking, writing, reading, or listening task.

Avoid memorizing advanced phrases without understanding their register, completing papers without reviewing errors, neglecting listening, translating complex English word for word, choosing writing tasks by topic alone, and practising without a timer. Clear, controlled language is more effective than ambitious structures that obscure meaning.

Mock exam-day checklist

Read the instructions carefully and confirm how many tasks you must complete. Follow your school's timing rather than one remembered from a different course or level.

  • Mark the required audience, purpose, and content in writing prompts
  • Answer every receptive question unless incorrect answers are penalized
  • Keep moving after a missed listening detail
  • Infer unfamiliar vocabulary from context
  • Reserve checking time for writing
  • Make corrections legibly

Conclusion

Successful IB Language Acquisition mock exam prep depends on four habits: confirming the school format, organizing language by theme, practising assessed skills under time pressure, and converting mistakes into targeted work. Treat November mocks as a diagnosis of current performance rather than a final judgment.

RevisionDojo can support this process through Language B exam guidance, Questionbank practice, Flashcards, and Jojo AI. Start with a diagnostic task, follow the four-week plan, and finish with a realistic timed mock and careful review.
