Why Is Criterion D Worth the Most Marks?

Criterion D is worth the most marks because it assesses critical reflection and evaluation: how thoughtfully you interpret your findings, assess your investigation and demonstrate deeper understanding of lived religion. It carries 10 of the 30 marks in the IB World Religions SL investigative study, making it the largest individual criterion.

What Makes Criterion D Different?

Collecting information establishes what you found; critical reflection examines what those findings mean and how confidently you can draw conclusions. Criterion D therefore goes beyond reporting an interview or describing a ritual.

The assessment rewards your ability to connect findings to your research question, reconsider assumptions and evaluate how your methods shaped the evidence.

ARationale and preliminary research8
BPlan for study3
CSummary of significant findings6
DCritical reflection and evaluation10
EReferences and compliance with format3

A common misconception is that Criterion D simply repeats Criterion C. Criterion C explains significant findings in relation to the question; Criterion D critically examines their implications, limitations and contribution to your understanding.

What Strong Reflection Looks Like

Suppose you investigate the significance of Shabbat for a British Reform Jewish family. Reporting their practices supplies findings. Reflection considers whether your preliminary expectations were accurate, how this family's interpretation relates to Reform Judaism and why one interview cannot represent every Reform Jewish household.

For the highest band, 9-10 marks, develop:

  • How far your research question enabled meaningful findings.
  • How your understanding of religious belief, practice or experience changed.
  • Misconceptions, inconsistencies, assumptions and possible bias.
  • Strengths and limitations of your methods.
  • Evidence-based conclusions and specific possibilities for future research.

Assessment Technique

Under the compulsory heading “Critical reflection and evaluation”, connect each judgment to evidence from your investigation. Replace “more interviews would improve reliability” with an explanation of whose perspectives are missing and how including them could test your conclusions.
