Direct answer: Inequitable access to clean water increases disease, disability and premature death among disadvantaged populations. It also reinforces poverty because poorer health reduces access to education, employment and income.
Level and syllabus: This belongs to IB ESS Subtopic 4.2: Water access, use and security. The social, economic and political influences on equitable access are studied at SL and HL, while the explicit link between inequitable access, health and sustainable development is HL content.
Water security means having access to sufficient amounts of safe drinking water. When access is unequal, marginalized communities may depend on contaminated sources, have inadequate sanitation or pay a greater proportion of their income for water.
| Pathway | Effect on human health |
|---|---|
| Pathogens in untreated water | Cause waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery and typhoid, particularly where sewage contaminates drinking water. |
| Insufficient water for hygiene | Prevents effective handwashing and cleaning, increasing the transmission of infectious diseases. |
| Chemical contamination | Pollutants such as arsenic, lead, nitrates or industrial chemicals may cause chronic poisoning, developmental damage or cancer. |
| Time and cost of collecting water | Reduce time available for education and paid work, while physical water carrying may cause injury. |
| Unequal healthcare access | Makes water-related illness more dangerous because diagnosis and treatment may be delayed or unaffordable. |
This is an issue of environmental justice because exposure and access vary with socioeconomic status, race, gender and location. In Flint, Michigan, the 2014 water crisis exposed residents to elevated lead levels after the municipal water source changed, disproportionately affecting a low-income, majority-Black community.
A common misconception is that water scarcity only means insufficient rainfall. Access may instead be restricted by pollution, inadequate infrastructure, high prices, political exclusion or unequal distribution.
