Use your GDC to graph the function, select its maximum or minimum command, and specify an interval around the turning point. Record both coordinates: a local maximum or minimum point must be written as ((x,y)), not just as a single value.
Method Using a GDC
A stationary point occurs where the gradient is zero, so . A local maximum is higher than nearby points, while a local minimum is lower than nearby points.
- Enter the function into the graphing application.
- Choose a suitable viewing window that includes the required domain.
- Graph the function and identify each apparent turning point.
- Select the GDC's maximum or minimum command.
- Set lower and upper bounds on either side of the point, or place the cursor near it, depending on the GDC model.
