Electromagnetic induction transformed later industrialization by making large-scale electricity generation and distribution possible. It enabled generators, transformers, and induction-based motors, allowing factories and transport systems to move beyond direct dependence on steam power.
The Mechanism
Electromagnetic induction occurs when changing magnetic flux through a conductor induces an electromotive force (emf). In IB Physics D.4, an induced emf is described by Faraday's law:
Here, is the number of coil turns and is magnetic flux. The negative sign represents Lenz's law: the induced emf acts in a direction that opposes the change producing it, consistent with conservation of energy.
In a generator, mechanical energy rotates a coil in a magnetic field, continuously changing its flux and producing alternating current. Steam turbines, water turbines, and later other energy sources could therefore generate electrical energy on an industrial scale.
| Application | Effect on industrialization |
|---|---|
| Generators | Converted mechanical energy into electrical energy for factories and cities. |
| Transformers | Used induction to increase voltage for efficient transmission and decrease it for safe local use. |
| Electric motors | Converted electrical energy back into mechanical work, powering individual machines. |
| Electric transport and lighting | Supported trams, rail systems, longer factory operating hours, and expanding cities. |
Factories no longer needed every machine mechanically connected to one central steam engine through belts and shafts. Individual electric motors allowed more flexible layouts, safer operation, and greater control of production.
A common misconception is that electromagnetic induction began the original Industrial Revolution. Steam power drove its early stages; induction was central to the later electrification associated with the Second Industrial Revolution.
Exam Technique
For an HL Explain question, link the complete causal chain: changing magnetic flux induces emf, generators produce electrical energy, transformers enable transmission, and motors power machinery. Do not discuss industrial effects without first explaining the D.4 induction mechanism.
