A macrocycle is the complete long-term training period, a mesocycle is a medium-term phase within it, and a microcycle is the shortest repeating block. Together, they form a hierarchy used to organize periodization.
How the Three Cycles Fit Together
Periodization divides a training programme into planned stages so that training volume, intensity, recovery, and specificity can be adjusted over time. This helps an athlete reach peak performance for an important competition while reducing the risks of overtraining, injury, and performance plateaus.
| Cycle | Typical scale and purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Macrocycle | The entire training plan, often covering a season or year. It targets the athlete’s main long-term performance goal. | A 10-month plan leading to an international championship. |
| Mesocycle | A phase lasting several weeks or months, with a specific training objective. | A six-week strength phase followed by an eight-week power phase. |
| Microcycle | The smallest planned block, commonly about one week. It specifies individual training sessions and recovery days. | Two strength sessions, three sport-specific sessions, one active-recovery day, and one rest day. |
The cycles are nested: one macrocycle contains several mesocycles, and each mesocycle contains several microcycles. For example, a yearly macrocycle may include preparation, competition, and transition mesocycles; each phase is then divided into weekly microcycles.
The durations are not fixed. They depend on the sport, competition schedule, athlete’s training status, and intended adaptation. A common misconception is that macrocycle, mesocycle, and microcycle describe different levels of exercise intensity. They describe time frames and organizational levels, although intensity and volume are manipulated within each cycle.
IB Exam Technique
For subtopic A.3.1 Qualities of training, define each cycle, state their hierarchical relationship, and apply them to a sporting example. If asked to distinguish them, compare both duration and purpose rather than merely stating that one is longer than another.
